The following procedures should be used when servicing the Transaxle Case Cover (Labour Operation K7500) on a 1993 Buick Century or Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera with a 3300 engine and 3T40 transaxle. Note also that the published time for this Labour Time Study has changed to lowering of the left side of the frame to service the side cover.
TRANSAXLE CASE COVER AND/OR GASKET ---------------------------------- Tools Required:
o J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture
o J 36462 Engine Support Fixture Adapter Leg
Remove or Disconnect
1. Air cleaner and duct assembly.
2. Shift cable at lever and remove shift cable bracket from transaxle.
3. T.V. cable from throttle body.
4. T.V. cable from transaxle and disconnect at rod.
5. Engine torque strut from engine.
6. Install J 28467-A and J 36462.
7. Raise vehicle and suitably support. Refer to SECTION OA.
8. Left front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to SECTION 3E.
9. Left engine splash shield.
10. Intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.
11. Intermediate shaft from stub shaft. Refer to SECTION 3F.
12. Left lower ball joint. Refer to SECTION 3C.
13. Transaxle front and rear mount nuts from frame.
14. Air deflector screws.
15. Support right and left sides of frame with jackstands.
16. Left side frame-to-body bolts. Refer to SECTION 10-3.
17. Lower the left side of engine/transaxle (approximately 10-15 cm [4 to 6 inches]) using J 28467-A.
18. Valve body cover bolts, cover and gasket.
20. Transaxle oil cooler lines from transaxle.
21. Front and rear transaxle mounts.
22. Throttle valve lever.
23. Transaxle case inner electrical connector.
24. Solenoid screw, remove solenoid with wiring harness attached.
25. Valve body cover bolts and cover.
26. Auxiliary valve body bolts and valve body. Make sure number one checkball does not fallout, if so, refer to SECTION 7A-lB for proper location.
27. Oil pump drive rod.
28. Valve body, cover, spacer plate and gaskets as an assembly.
o Make sure to remove as an assembly in order to maintain proper location of the five (5) checkballs. If any checkballs fall out, refer to SECTION 7A-1B for proper location.
29. Oil pump assembly.
30. Left drive axle. Refer to SECTION 4D.
31. Manual valve.
32. Transaxle case cover bolts, gasket and cover.
33. Accumulator assembly.
34. Drive axle oil seal. Refer to "Drive Axle Seal" procedure in the Service Manual.
35. Thermo element. Refer to "Thermo Element Replacement" procedure in the Service Manual.
36. Transfer necessary components.
Clean
o Case and all gasket surfaces.
Install or Connect
1. Drive axle oil seal. Refer to "Drive Axle Seal" procedure in the Service Manual.
2. Thermo element. Refer to "Thermo Element Replacement" procedure in the Service Manual.
3. Accumulator assembly and new seals.
4. Gasket, transaxle case cover and bolts.
Tighten
o Transaxle case cover bolts to 14 N.m (125 lb.in.).
5. Manual valve.
6. Left drive axle. Refer to SECTION 4D.
7. Oil pump assembly.
8. Gaskets, spacer plate, valve body and cover. Make sure the five (5) checkballs are located properly, if not, refer to SECTION 7A-1B for proper location.
9. Oil pump drive rod.
10. Gasket, auxiliary valve body and bolts. Make sure number one checkball is located properly, if not, refer to SECTION 7A-1B for the proper location.
Tighten
o Auxiliary valve body bolts M6 to 11 N.m (98 lb.in.).
o Auxiliary valve body bolts M8 to 24 N.m (18 lb.ft.).
o Valve body bolts to 11 N.m (98 lb.in.).
11. Solenoid and wiring harness.
12. Transaxle case inner electrical connector.
13. Throttle valve lever.
14. Front and rear transaxle mounts.
15. Transaxle oil cooler lines to transaxle.
16. Transaxle case electrical connector.
17. Valve body cover gasket, cover and bolts.
Tighten
o Valve body cover bolts to 1 1 N.m (98 lb.in.).
18. Raise frame to proper position with the aid of an assistant.
19. New frame bolts. Refer to SECTION 10-3.
20. Remove jackstands.
21. Air deflector screws.
22. Front and rear transaxle mount nuts.
Tighten
o Transaxle mount nuts to 45 N.m (33 lb.ft.).
23. Left lower ball joint. Refer to SECTION 3C.
When installing the intermediate shaft make sure the shaft is seated prior to pinch bolt installation. If the pinch bolt is inserted into the coupling before shaft installation, the two mating surfaces may disengage.
24. Intermediate shaft to stub shaft. Refer to SECTION 3F.
25. Intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
26. Left engine splash shield.
27. Left front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to SECTION 3E.
28. Lower vehicle.
29. Remove J 28467-A and J 36462.
30. Engine torque strut to engine.
31. T.V. cable to transaxle and connect rod.
32. T.V. cable to throttle body.
33. Shift cable bracket to transaxle and install shift cable to lever.
Adjust
o cable.
34. Air cleaner and duct assembly.
Adjust
o Fluid level.
Inspect
o For proper completion of repairs.
o For proper fluid level.
o For fluid leaks.
