During the 1985 Model the secondary hood latch design was changed from vertical to horizontal actuated. service replacement stock will consist of the horizontal or side action release mechanism. If the hood secondary latch is replaced on a car that had a vertical actuated secondary release, the following procedure should be followed:
1. Open hood.
2. Remove secondary latch mechanism.
3. Mark headlamp and radiator grille top mounting panel for new secondary latch cutout with template fabricated from illustration in bulletin (Figure 1).
4. Loosen top of panel and cut out enlarged marked area on panel.
5. Tighten panel back down.
6. Install new side action latch in same location as old latch. Torque latch screws to 8-11 N.m (6-8 lb. ft.).
7. If old hood is reused, front centre hood bumper stop must be relocated. Carefully remove bumper and relocate an equal distance to other side of hood centreline. If hood is slotted in this location move bumper to outboard side of slot, mark and carefully drill two .25 inch diameter holes to retain bumper. Use bumper as a template to mark hole locations.
8. Reinstall front centre hood bumper stop in new location.
9. Close hood and check operation.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
