DOOR WEATHERSTRIP REPAIR (PROCEDURE FOR TAPED PORTION)

SUBJECT: DOOR WEATHERSTRIP REPAIR - NEW PROCEDURE - FOR THE TAPED ON PORTION OF THE DOOR HEADER COVER ON WINDOW CHANNEL

MODELS AFFECTED: 1991 PARK AVENUE/ELECTRA

Use the following procedure for the taped on portion of the door header cover on window channel.

REMOVING THE PART

To remove the taped on portion of the window channel part, peel back the rubber. If unable to peel back the rubber, use a razor blade to cut through the foam tape taking care not to cut the rubber or scratch the painted metal surface. Do this for the entire length of the taped area.

REATTACHING THE PART

a. To reattach the same part, remove the thick masses of acrylic foam from the rubber and painted metal that may show through on the visible surface of the rubber.

b. Clean the surface of the paint and/or tape residue with isopropyl alcohol to remove surface contamination such as dust, grease, etc.

c. After cleaning, apply a 1/4" bead of 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive No. 8001 or equivalent on the door in alignment with the tape residue on the rubber.

d. Apply finger pressure to the top of the rubber to force the #8001 or equivalent adhesive to spread out. Next lift the rubber to expose the distributed #8001 or equivalent adhesive and allow the adhesive to dry to a tacky feel, about 3 minutes.

e. After the drying period, use a hand roller to apply pressure to the top of the part to bond the rubber to the painted metal surface.
