Restraint System
Seat belts are the primary means of occupant restraint.
Seat belts help to keep the occupant inside the passenger compartment
and to gradually reduce the crash forces during the following events:
• | Frontal impact type crashes |
• | Rear impact type crashes |
• | Side impact type crashes |
All seat belts have emergency locks in the retractors. The retractors
remain unlocked during normal operation. The retractors remain unlocked under
normal driving conditions in order allow free movement of the upper body of
the occupant.
A pendulum locks the seat belt webbing into position. The pendulum causes
a locking bar to engage a cog on the spool of the retractor mechanism when
the following actions occur:
• | Rapid extraction of the seat belt webbing from the retractor |
• | An abrupt change in vehicle speed |
• | An abrupt change in vehicle direction |
• | Operation of the vehicle on a steep upgrade |
• | Operation of the vehicle on a steep downgrade |
This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR)
System in addition to the seat belts. Refer to SIR in Restraints for more
information.
Front Seat System
The front belt system is an all belts-to-seat system.
The front seat belt system includes the following components:
• | The lap belt retractor (4) |
| The lap belt retractor is attached to the side of the seat assembly
with a nut (5). |
| The shoulder belt is attached to the lap belt buckle. |
| The shoulder belt is fed through the following components: |
1. | The front roller assembly trim cover |
2. | The roller assembly (1) |
3. | Down the back of the seat assembly |
The other end of the shoulder belt is attached to the lap belt retractor
(4).
| The center belt latch is attached to the side of the seat assembly with
a nut. |
| The center belt buckle is attached to the seat adjuster rail with a
rivet for assembly. |
| The center belt buckle is retained by the seat anchor bolt. |
Rear Seat System
The rear seat belt system includes the following components:
• | The rear seat center belt buckle |
| The rear seat center belt buckle is attached to the floor pan with a
bolt. |
| The latch is located on the right side. |
| The buckle is located on the left side. |
• | The rear seat shoulder belt retractor |
| The rear seat shoulder belt retractor is attached to the rear window
panel with a bolt. |
Child Restraint
Caution: A child in a rear-facing child restraint can be seriously injured if
the right-front passenger's air bag inflates. This is because the back of
a rear-facing child restraint would be very close to the inflating air bag.
It is always better to secure a child restraint in the rear seat. If a forward-facing
child seat is suitable for your child, ALWAYS move the front passenger seat
as far back as it will go and then install the child restraint. Be sure the
child restraint position does not conflict with any additional requirements
provided by the manufacturer. For more information, refer to the vehicle owner's
manual and the instructions that came with the child restraint.
The child seat should be installed and secured according
to the manufacturer's instructions.
The automatic locking (cinch) feature can be used in order to secure
the child seat.
The child seat should be anchored if the child seat has a top strap.
The kit for the rear center position is delivered in the glove box on all
new vehicles which are first sold in Canada. The kits are available
in the United States through GMSPO. Service instructions are included in the
installation kit.
