RATTLE NOISE FROM REAR OF VEH. (TIGHTEN FUEL TANK STRAPS)

SUBJECT: RATTLE NOISE FROM REAR OF VEHICLE (TIGHTEN FUEL TANK STRAPS)

MODELS: 1998 BUICK PARK AVENUE, RIVIERA 1998 OLDSMOBILE AURORA

CONDITION:

SOME CUSTOMERS MAY COMMENT ABOUT A RATTLE NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE.

CAUSE:

THE MATERIAL OF THE FUEL TANK (HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE) HAS THE CHARACTERISTIC OF ABSORBING FUEL, WHICH MAY RESULT IN THE FUEL TANK EXPANDING SLIGHTLY. THIS IN TURN TIGHTENS THE INTERFACE BETWEEN THE FUEL TANK AND FUEL TANK STRAPS. THIS PHENOMENON IS CONSIDERED A NEW VEHICLE GREEN CONDITION THAT DISAPPEARS IN TIME.

CORRECTION:

AFTER NORMAL SOURCES HAVE BEEN RULED OUT AS POSSIBLE CAUSES FOR THE RATTLE, PUSH UP ON THE FUEL TANK. IF THE LH FUEL TANK BOLT IS TO THE REAR OF THE LH FUEL TANK STRAP SLOT (SEE FIGURE 1, VIEW A), A LOOSE FEEL CONDITION MAY EXIST. THIS CAN BE CORRECTED BY USING THE FOLLOWING SERVICE PROCEDURE:

1. LOOSEN THE LH FUEL TANK STRAP ATTACHING BOLT.

2. AT THE LH FUEL TANK BOLT HEAD, PULL THE LH FUEL TANK STRAP UNTIL THE FUEL BOLT HEAD IS POSITIONED IN THE MOST FRONT PORTION OF THE FUEL TANK STRAP.

3. RE-TIGHTEN THE LH FUEL TANK STRAP ATTACHING BOLT. TIGHTEN BOLT TO 48 N.M (35 LB FT).
