Circuit Description

The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) sends a message over the Serial Data Line Class 2 to the Inflatable restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) if the IPC cannot turn the AIR BAG warning lamp ON or OFF.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

If the SDM receives a message from the IPC that the IPC cannot control the AIR BAG warning lamp. This test for DTC B1161 is run ASYNCHRONOUSLY during CONTINUOUS MONITORING by the IPC.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

The SDM sets a diagnostic trouble code.

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC
    • Current DTC
       - The ignition is turned OFF.
       - The SDM receives the correct IPC message response over the Serial Data Line Class 2.
    • History DTC
       - You issue a scan tool CLEAR CODES command.
       - Once 250 malfunction free ignition cycles have occurred.

Diagnostic Aids

It is extremely unlikely that the SDM is malfunctioning if DTC B1161 is set. A malfunctioning IPC is the most likely cause of this DTC.

  1. Malfunctions within the Class 2 Serial Data Line will set this DTC. These malfunctions are addressed in the SIR Diagnostic System Check. Failure to properly perform the SIR Diagnostic System Check may result in misdiagnosis.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
  3. Clear the SIR DTCs.
  4. Request the SIR DTC Display.
