SHORTER OPERATING RANGE FOR REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM

SUBJECT: SHORTER OPERATING RANGE FOR REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY (DIAGNOSIS/REPLACE COAXIAL CABLE)

MODELS AFFECTED: 1991 RIVIERAS

Some 1991 Rivieras may experience a shorter operating range than the production intent of 15 feet. This condition may be caused by some vehicles being built with an incorrect combination of back glass and RKE coaxial cable. A change was made early in the 1991 model year to use both a new back glass with a passenger side, short antenna and a grounded coaxial cable. Some vehicles may have the new glass with a past model ungrounded cable.

Before referring to the Service Information Manual Section 9K to diagnose a range complaint, check for the correct back glass and coaxial cable combination. The vehicle should look like either Figure 1 or Figure 2, not any combination of both.

o If the vehicle has the hardware combination shown in Figure 1 or Figure 2 and exhibits poor range performance, refer to the Service Information Manual Sections 9K or 8A for diagnosis.

o If the vehicle has the ungrounded coaxial cable shown in Figure 1 and the back glass shown in Figure 2, replace the coaxial cable with P/N 22101946.

To replace the coaxial cable use the following procedure:

1. Disconnect coaxial cable at receiver module.

2. Attach guide wire to coaxial cable.

3. Pull coaxial cable through conduit along rear of seat.

4. Loosen left upper trim panel between rear package shelf and head liner.

5. Pull coaxial cable and guide wire through package shelf grommet.

6. Disconnect coaxial cable at antenna at back glass.

7. Loosen head liner by gently pulling down on rear edge.

8. Cut tape securing coaxial cable to mounting clips.

9. Remove cable.

10. Attach new cable, P/N 22101946, receiver module connector to guide wire above rear package shelf grommet.

IMPORTANT: Don't use the coaxial cable (P/N 22101946) with early 1991 or 1989-1990 vehicles. For vehicles built as shown in Figure 1, use P/N 22087121.

11. Pull coaxial cable through package shelf grommet with guide wire.

12. Remove guide wire.

13. Connect coaxial cable to antenna.

14. Screw coaxial cable ground ring to roof inner panel (there is already a hole present in roof inner panel).

15. Tape coaxial cable to mounting clips.

16. Route cable behind trim panel and secure.

17. Install trim panel.

18. Secure head liner with gentle upward pressure.

19. Connect cable to receiver module.

20. Test RKE operating range.
