RATTLE IN INSTRUMENT CLUSTER REPAIR PROCEDURE

Models Affected: 1984 Regals and Rivieras

Cause: The speedometer frame is rubber mounted for noise reduction. This can allow the speedometer dial flange to make intermittent contace with the plastic retainer, generating a rattling noise. This is especially true when the speedometer neck is exposed to speedometer cable lateral stress. See illustration.

Field Fix: In the event a customer comments on a rattle, cut off a piece of rubber gasket (1-3/8" long, 1/2" wide) and attach it with adhesive to the area shown in the illustration.

Production Fix: Effective 4/16/84, the addition of a rubber channel gasket to the speedometer dial flange was made. Both procedures will eliminate the rattle.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
