LOSS OF CLUSTER LIGHTS CLUSTER REPAIR

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1984 Buick Regals

Some early 1984 Regals, up to VIN EH405000, may experience an intermittent loss of instrument cluster lighting. The condition may be due to a loose connection at the cluster carrier.

This condition can be corrected by installing a 3mm (1/8 inch) shim as shown in the attached illustration.

Installation instructions are as follows:

1. Remove left hand trim cover.

2. Remove 4 (7mm) screws holding cluster carrier to I/P.

3. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the split in the engine compartment if two-piece cable is used or transmission in order to gain slack.

4. Remove steering column trim cover.

5. Disconnect the shift indicator clip.

6. Lower the steering column.

7. Pull the cluster forward far enough to disconnect the speedometer cable and necessary hard wire bulbs.

8. Pull the gear selector lever down into low and pull the cluster out far enough to remove 1 (5mm) screw holding the VSS optic head to the speedometer.

9. Pull cluster connector out of carrier.

10. Using 3mm (1/8 inch) plastic shim stock, cut two (2) pieces 2cm x 5cm (3/4 inch x 2 inch) and glue in place where shown in illustration.

11. Reinstall cluster connector.

12. Reinstall cluster assembly.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
