The speedometer frame in the 1984 Buick 'G' and 'E' models is rubber mounted for noise reduction. This can allow the speedometer dial flange to make intermittent contact with the plastic retainer, generating a rattling noise. This is especially true when the speedometer neck is exposed to speedometer cable lateral stress. See Fig. 1.
In the event a customer comments of a rattle, cut off a piece of rubber gasket (1 3/8 in. long, 1/2 in. wide) and attach it with adhesive to the area shown in the Figure.
Effective 4/16/84, the addition of a rubber channel gasket to the speedometer dial flange was made. Both procedures will eliminate the rattle.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
