Problem

Action

There is a hissing noise when the following conditions exist:

    • The steering wheel is turned.
    • The vehicle is stationary.
    • The noise is more prevalent when the brakes are applied.

If the noise is very objectionable, replace the power steering gear. A replacement power steering gear will also have a slight noise, and is not always a cure for the condition.

A noise is audible after a power steering system fluid level check.

  1. Operate the vehicle at idle.
  2. Ensure that the engine has reached operating temperature.
  3. Listen for the noise.

The intermediate steering shaft seal at the column is loose.

  1. Service the intermediate steering shaft seal at the steering column. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
  2. Replace the intermediate shaft seal at the column. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.

The intermediate steering shaft seal at the gear is loose.

  1. Service the intermediate steering shaft seal at the power steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
  2. Replace the intermediate shaft seal at the gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
