Play a known good cassette tape in the tape player.

Does the tape play weak, slow or garbled?

Inspect the tape player for an obstruction through the tape door.

Did you find an obstruction?

Go to Step 5

  1. Perform the motor speed test with the diagnostic test tape from the J 39916-A for service procedure.
  2. Service the radio. Refer to Diagnostic System Check - Radio/Audio System for service procedure.

Is the motor speed correct?

Go to Diagnostic System Check - Radio/Audio System

Go to Step 6

  1. Remove the obstruction.
  2. Inspect the moving parts and the tape head.
  3. Clean the moving parts and the tape head. Refer to Cassette Player Care and Cleaning for service procedure.
  4. Insert a cleaning cassette.
  5. Use a diagnostic tape from the J 39916-A for service procedure.

Does the test tape operate correctly?

Go to Step 6

Replace the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement for service procedure.
