Steering Effort Hard in One or Both Directions Increase of Effort

Condition

Causes

A momentary increase in effort when turning the wheel fast to the right or to the left.

    â€¢ High internal spool valve leakage
    â€¢ Steering gear leakage
    â€¢ A sticking or a damaged pinion spool valve
    â€¢ Insufficient pump pressure
    â€¢ Low fluid level

Steering Effort Hard in One or Both Directions Lack of Assist

Conditions

Causes

    â€¢ Hard steering is present.
    â€¢ Lack of assist is present.
    â€¢ A Magnasteerâ„¢ system malfunction at low speeds

    â€¢ A damaged intermediate shaft coupling
    â€¢ A worn intermediate shaft coupling
    â€¢ Tight steering column bearings
    â€¢ A sticking flow control valve
    â€¢ Insufficient pump pressure
    â€¢ Air in the power steering system
    â€¢ Low fluid level
    â€¢ Excessive internal pump leakage
    â€¢ Excessive internal rack and pinion leakage
