The power steering system may be leaking if any of the following symptoms are present:

    • Fluid leakage is on the floor.
    • Fluid leaks are visible on the steering gear or the pump.
    • A growling noise is heard when the engine is cold or during parking.
    • Power steering is lost during parking.
    • Steering effort is heavy.

Inspect the power steering system for the following conditions:

    • An overfilled reservoir
    • Fluid aeration
    • Fluid overflow
    • Loose hose connections
    • An exact point of leakage

The point where fluid is dripping is not necessarily the point where the system is leaking. Fluid overflowing from the reservoir may appear to drip from the bottom of the housing.

When resolving these conditions, inspect for an external leak in the power steering system.

When service is required, perform the following procedure:

  1. Clean the leakage area upon disassembly.
  2. Replace the leaking seal.
  3. Inspect the component sealing surfaces for damage.
  4. Tighten the bolts to specifications.
