Park Lock System Check Floor Shift

  1. Open the driver side door and keep the door open.
  2. Depress the parking brake in order to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
  3. Remove the ignition key from the lock cylinder.
  4. Attempt to pull the shift lever from the PARK position.

Are you able to shift from the PARK position?

  1. Test the floor shifter solenoid. Replace the shifter control assembly if found to be non-functional. Refer to Brake Transmission Shift Interlock Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T60 - E.
  2. The mechanical override lever may be stuck in the depressed position.
  3. Inspect the shifter cable adjustment.
  4. The swizzle stick may be stuck in the depressed position.

Is the inspection completed?

  1. Insert the ignition key into the lock cylinder. The key chime/alarm should sound.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the full RUN position, where the instrument panel lights are lit, but the engine is not started.
  3. Pull on the shift lever without depressing the brake pedal.

Are you able to shift from the PARK position?

  1. Test the brake switch adjustment.
  2. Test the electrical connection to the floor shifter for full attachment.
  3. Test the electric fuse that feeds the floor shifter.
  4. The swizzle stick may be stuck in the depressed position.
  5. Test the floor shifter solenoid. Replace the shifter control assembly if found to be non-functional. Refer to Brake Transmission Shift Interlock Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T60 - E.
  6. Test the electric wiring harness.

Is the inspection completed?

  1. Depress the brake pedal.
  2. Move the shift lever from the PARK position down to the LOW 1 position, and then up to the NEUTRAL position.
  3. Attempt to turn the ignition key to the OFF-LOCK position. The key rotation should stop before reaching the OFF-LOCK position and the key should be restricted from being removed.

Is the key removable?

Replace the electric park lock solenoid on the steering column.

Is the repair completed?

With the key in the same position (before reaching OFF-LOCK), return the shift lever to the PARK position and release the shifter handle button.

Does the lever shift to the full PARK position?

  1. Inspect the shifter cable adjustment.
  2. Inspect PRNDL for proper adjustment.
  3. The swizzle stick may be stuck in a depressed position.

  1. Inspect the electrical connection to the electric park lock solenoid.
  2. If the steering column electric park lock solenoid is not functional, replace the solenoid.

  1. Release the parking brake.
  2. Close the driver side door.

  4. Remove the ignition key from the lock cylinder.

Replace the automatic transmission shift interlock solenoid. Refer to Brake Transmission Shift Interlock Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T60 - E.

  1. Verify that there is power to the solenoid. If there is no power to the solenoid, inspect the electrical connections and the brake switch.
  2. If there is power to the solenoid and you cannot shift from the PARK position, refer to Brake Transmission Shift Interlock Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T60 - E.

  1. Depress the brake pedal.
  2. Move the shift lever from the PARK position down to the LOW 1 position, and then up to the NEUTRAL position.

Can the shift lever be shifted from the PARK position?

Replace the automatic transmission shift interlock solenoid. Refer to Brake Transmission Shift Interlock Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T60 - E.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Verify that no power goes to the solenoid when the brake is depressed.
  2. Replace the solenoid.
  3. If power goes to the solenoid, Replace the automatic transmission shift interlock solenoid. Refer to Brake Transmission Shift Interlock Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T60 - E.

Attempt to turn the ignition key to the OFF-LOCK position. The key rotation should stop before reaching the OFF-LOCK position and the key should be restricted from being removed.

  1. With the key in the same position (before reaching OFF-LOCK), return the shift lever to the PARK position.
  2. Turn the ignition key towards the RUN position, then back to the OFF-LOCK position.
  3. Attempt to remove the key fully.

Does the shift lever snap forward to the full PARK detent?

If the shift lever does NOT snap forward to the full PARK detent, refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment in Automatic Transaxle - 4T60 - E.

If the shift lever DOES snap to the full PARK position, replace the automatic transmission shift interlock solenoid. Refer to Brake Transmission Shift Interlock Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T60 - E.
