Are all the radio functions operating normally at the radio?

  1. Disconnect connector C415.
  2. Plug the dash harness radio connector into the radio (part of C415).
  3. Turn the radio ON.

Are all the radio functions operational at the radio?

--

Go to Step 5

  1. Disconnect the radio connector.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  3. Turn the radio ON.
  4. Measure the voltage between radio connector, terminal 14 (Pontiac) or terminal E6 (Buick) and ground while operating each steering wheel control button.
  5. Compare each voltage with the voltage specified.

Are the voltages within range?

0-5 V

Repair CKT 1011 for the following conditions:

    • A short to B+
    • A short to ground

Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Service the radio.

  1. Inspect CKT 1011 for a poor connection at terminal 14 (Pontiac) or terminal E6 (Buick).
  2. If the circuit is OK, service the radio.

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Disconnect and remove the inflator module from the steering wheel. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement in SIR.
  3. Disconnect the steering wheel control switches connector.
  4. Measure the resistance between steering wheel switches connector terminal A and terminal C while operating each steering wheel control button.
  5. Compare each resistance with the specified values.

Are the measured resistances approximately equal to the specified values?

    • Vol (Up) - 1270 ohms
    • Vol (Down) - 1564 ohms
    • Play - 1912 ohms
    • Mute - 2387 ohms
    • Seek (Up) - 3102 ohms
    • Seek (Down) - 4282 ohms
    • AM/FM - 6652 ohms
    • Preset - 13632 ohms

  1. Inspect CKT 43 for an open between the SIR coil assembly connector terminal A and S227.
  2. Inspect CKT 1011 between SIR coil assembly connector terminal C and radio connector terminal 14 (Pontiac) or terminal E6 (Buick) for the following conditions:
  3. • An open
    • High resistance

Are the circuits good?

Replace the steering wheel control switches. Refer to Steering Wheel Control Switches Replacement .

Repair the following components as needed:

    • CKT 43
    • CKT 1011
    • Replace the coil assembly. Refer to the following procedures:
      •  Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Disassemble - Off Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt
      •  Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Assemble - Off Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt
