NON-VOLATILE MEMORY ODOMETER CHIP EXCHANGE

MODELS AFFECTED: 1985 SOMERSET

A replacement NVM chip can be obtained through the AC-Delco Service Centers authorized for digital instrument cluster repair, when diagnosis indicates that the total odometer display of "error" is due to the NVM chip.

Replacement chips may be requested with either zero miles or with recent available known mileage. A chip with zero mileage should be requested when recent available known mileage is not available. Dealer must install an odometer replacement sticker on the driver door with approximate mileage when installing a chip with zero miles (unless on a new car).

When recent mileage is known, a chip may be requested with latest available mileage. Replacement sticker is not required if replaced chip has miles on it.

After either types of replacement, the replaced chip is to be returned to the AC-Delco Service Center. NVM chips carry a core charge of $200. Zones will be notified of any chips not returned within 60 days. All replaced chips are returned to AC Division for evaluation and reading.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
