DEFINITION: The starter solenoid clicks, but the engine cranks slowly or not at all. Always ensure that a good battery is installed in the vehicle, starting system operation depends heavily on the battery condition.

Go to Starting System Check

1. Connect a DMM between the positive and negative battery posts.
2. Turn the ignition switch to START.
3. Measure the voltage at the battery while cranking the engine.

Is the voltage within the specified value?

Greater than 9.5 V

Go to Step 3

Go to Charging System Check

1. Connect a DMM between the negative battery terminal and the starter housing.
2. Turn the ignition switch to START.
3. Measure the voltage drop between the negative battery terminal and the starter housing while cranking the engine.

Is the voltage within the specified value?

Less than 0.5 V

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 6

1. Connect a DMM between the positive battery terminal and terminal C1 at the starter solenoid.
2. Turn the ignition switch to START.
3. Measure the voltage drop between the positive battery terminal and the starter solenoid terminal B while cranking the engine.

Is the voltage within the specified value?

Less than 0.5 V

Go to Step 5

Go to Step 7

Check for any mechanical issues which may cause the engine or starter motor to bind up and not turn the engine over. If OK, replace the starter motor assembly. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

Is the repair complete?

Replace the negative battery cable.

Is the repair complete?

Replace the positive battery cable.

Is the repair complete?

1. Connect all ot the connectors and components that were disconnected.
2. Check the starter for proper operation.

Does the engine crank?

System OK
