Damping Bushing Replacement - Rear Right Side

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 21474-01 Control Arm Bushing Set
    • J 42112 Rear Differential Bushing Kit
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Lower the rear axle differential. Refer Differential Replacement .

    3. Object Number: 218699 Size: SH
  3. Remove the engine fuel filter retaining strap (1).
  4. Suspend the engine fuel filter (1) to one side.

    5. Object Number: 218706 Size: SH
  5. Perform the following steps using the components from the J 21474-01 to press the bushing out of the cradle:
    6. 5.1. Install the J 21474-5 Bushing Receiver onto the J 21474-19 3/8-inch bolt.
    5.2. Insert the assembly through the bushing from the outside of the bushing.
    5.3. Install the J 42112-4 Bushing Driver/Remover onto the J 21474-19 3/8-inch bolt.
    5.4. Install the J 21474-18 3/8-inch nut onto the J 21474-19 3/8-inch bolt.

    Important: The rear differential bushings are removed from the inside outward. Once the rear differential bushings are removed they are not reusable. Therefore, the rear differential bushings must be replaced.

  6. Hold the J 21474-19 3/8-inch bolt while tightening the J 21474-18 3/8-inch nut until the bushing is removed from the suspension cradle.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 218720 Size: SH
  1. The bushing must be installed into the suspension cradle with the correct orientation as shown.
  2. Perform the following steps to install the bushing:

    2.1. Fit the J 21474-5 Bushing Receiver onto the J 21474-19 3/8-inch bolt.
    2.2. Insert the above assembly through the cradle bushing bore from the inside outward.
    2.3. Position the bushing onto the J 21474-19 3/8-inch bolt.
    2.4. Then, into the cradle bushing bore.
    2.5. Install the J 42112-5 Bushing Driver/Installer onto the J 21474-19 3/8-inch bolt.
    2.6. Install the J 21474-18 3/8-inch nut onto the J 21474-19 3/8-inch bolt.
    2.7. Draw the bushing into the bore with the correct orientation by holding the J 21474-18 3/8-inch nut stationary while tightening the J 21474-19 3/8-inch bolt.
    2.8. The bushing is positioned when the J 42112-5 Bushing Driver/Installer bottoms on the suspension cradle.

  3. Measure the distance between the inside surfaces of the bushings as shown. The distance should be between 300 and 302 mm (11.81 in and 11.88 in).
  4. Remove the tools.

  5. Reposition the engine fuel filter.
  6. Fasten the engine fuel filter retaining strap around the filter.
  7. Install the differential. Refer to Differential Replacement .
  8. Lower the vehicle.

Damping Bushing Replacement - Rear Left Side

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 21474-01 Control Arm Bushing Set
    • J 42112 Rear Differential Bushing Kit
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Lower the rear axle differential. Refer to Differential Replacement .

  3. Perform the following steps using the components from the J 21474-01 to press the bushing out of the cradle:
    4. 3.1. Install the J 21474-5 Bushing Receiver onto the J 21474-19 3/8-inch bolt.
    3.2. Insert the assembly through the bushing from the inside of the bushing.
    3.3. Install the J 42112-4 Bushing Driver/Remover onto the J 21474-19 3/8-inch bolt.
    3.4. Install the J 21474-18 3/8-inch nut onto the J 21474-19 3/8-inch bolt.

    Important: The bushings are removed from the outside inward. Once the bushings are removed they are not reusable. Therefore, the bushings must be replaced.

  4. Hold the J 21474-18 3/8-inch nut while tightening the J 21474-19 3/8-inch bolt until the bushing is drawn out of the cradle.

Installation Procedure

  1. The bushing must be installed into the suspension cradle with the correct orientation as shown.

  2. Perform the following steps to install the bushing:
    3. 2.1. Fit the J 21474-5 Bushing Receiver onto the J 21474-19 3/8-inch bolt.
    2.2. Insert the above assembly through the cradle bushing bore from the inside outward.
    2.3. Position the bushing onto the J 21474-19 3/8-inch bolt.
    2.4. Then, into the cradle bushing bore.
    2.5. Install the J 42112-5 Bushing Driver/Installer onto the J 21474-19 3/8-inch bolt.
    2.6. Install the J 21474-18 3/8-inch nut onto the J 21474-19 3/8-inch bolt.
    2.7. Draw the bushing into the bore with the correct orientation by holding the J 21474-18 3/8-inch nut stationary while tightening the J 21474-19 3/8-inch bolt.
    2.8. The bushing is positioned when the J 42112-5 Bushing Driver/Installer bottoms on the suspension cradle.
  3. Install the differential. Refer to Differential Replacement .
  4. Lower the vehicle.
