DEFINITION: This table is used to diagnose inoperative steering wheel controls. The steering wheel controls do illuminate when the exterior lamps are on.

Did you perform the Steering Wheel Control System Check?

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Turn ON the radio.
  3. Operate all of the steering wheel controls.

Do all of the steering wheel controls operate properly?

  1. Turn OFF the radio.
  2. Turn OFF the ignition.
  3. Disable the SIR. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  4. Disconnect the steering wheel radio controls connector.
  5. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  6. Turn ON the radio.
  7. Measure the voltage from the radio at terminal B of the harness connector and a good ground.

Does the voltage measure near the specified voltage?

5 V

  1. Measure the resistance between the steering wheel radio controls connector terminal B and terminal D.
  2. Press the following steering wheel radio controls and record the resistance values:
  3. • Volumn Up
    • Volumn Down
    • Mode
    • Select Up
    • Select Down
    • Scan

Do the recorded resistance readings measure near the specified values?

164 ohms

82 ohms

284 ohms

464 ohms

794 ohms

1474 ohms

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the radio connector.
  3. Test the input circuit between harness connector terminal B and the radio connector terminal F8 for a short, high resistance or an open. Refer Testing for Short to Ground to and Testing for Continuity in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the radio. Refer to Intermittents and Poor Connections Diagnosis in Wiring Systems.

  1. Replace the radio and perform the set-up procedure.
  2. Install a scan tool.
  3. Select RADIO THEFT from the SPECIAL FUNCTIONS menu.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
