The OnStar system offers customers a variety of different services such as, communication, navigation, security, and customer assistance features. These are made possible by the national cellular telephone infrastructure, the military GPS navigation system, the OnStar Call Center, and the vehicle installed OnStar equipment. The vehicle installed equipment is referred to as the Vehicle Communication Platform ( VCP ). The VCP includes a cellular phone, cellular data modem, and GPS receiver. The VCP sends and receives Class 2 data through the Vehicle Interface Unit ( VIU ) in order to communicate with other Class 2 modules.

    • lock/unlock doors .
Driver calls the Call Center and asks for unlock ( or lock ) signal to be sent to the vehicle. The VCP then sends a class 2 signal via the VIU to the Body Control Module ( BCM ) to unlock or lock the doors
    • Flash lights/honk horn
Driver calls the Call Center requesting the lights/horn to be cycled to aid in finding car in parking lot. The VCP then sends a class 2 signal via the VIU to the BCM to operate the lights/horns.
    • Navigation
Driver calls the Call Center requesting the current vehicle location and directions to his desired destination.
    • Roadside assistance key press
Driver dials the Call Center with a single key press.
    • Emergency key press
Driver dials the Call Center with a single key press
    • Air bag deployment detection
Following a air bag deployment, the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic seat belt pretensioner module sends a class 2 signal to the BCM, that a deployment has occurred. The body control module sends a class 2 signal to the VCP via the VIU, the VCP automatically notifies the Call Center an accident has occurred. The Call Center will respond by attempting to call the accident vehicle on the cellular phone. If the driver does not answer, the Call Center contacts the nearest 911 number with an accident report and the GPS vehicle location.
    • Theft detection
Following the detection of an unauthorized entry by the vehicle's theft deterrent detection system, the BCM sends a class 2 signal via the VIU to the VCP. The VCP will automatically send a data message to the Call Center. The call center will then contact the local authorities, while continuing to track the vehicle location via GPS data.

The OnStar System is a new on-vehicle communications system which is a dealer installed option. Fuse #28 supplies B+ to the Onstar system's, Vehicle Communication Platform ( VCP ) at all times. Ground for the VCP is supplied at all times by G201 through terminal 2 of the Cellular Phone connector. The Class 2 comunication line between the VCP and the vehicle architecture is located on terminal 3 of the cellular phone connector. For additonal information concerning system operation and diagnosis refer to the OnStar manual.
