Instrument Cluster Indicator Operation 99

Automatic Transmission Warning Lamp (1st Design)

This lamp comes on briefly when the ignition is turned to the RUN position. If the lamp remains on or illuminates during driving, a problem with the automatic transmission is indicated.

The transmission control module (TCM) performs a continual self diagnosis of certain control functions. The lamp illuminates only when an error is detected. The TCM stores in memory a current and/or history trouble code when a problem is detected.

Brake Pad Wear Indicator Lamp

This lamp illuminates when the vehicle's front brake pad linings have worn to the point of replacement. When this occurs the front brake linings should be inspected and/or replaced along with the sensor. Once this indicator lamp has illuminated the sensor must be replaced as its integrity has been compromised.

Brake To Shift Indicator Lamp

With the vehicle in the PARK position you must depress this switch in order to move the gear selector.

Check Engine Warning Lamp

The CHECK ENGINE lamp in the instrument cluster turns on during engine starting in order to serve as a bulb and system check. This light should turn off after the engine starts unless a problem has been detected by the system.

The engine control module (ECM) performs a continual self diagnosis of certain control functions and causes the CHECK ENGINE lamp to remain on when the engine is running if a problem is detected. The CHECK ENGINE lamp will remain on only as long as the error is detected. The ECM will store in memory a current and/or history trouble code if a problem is detected.

Engine Coolant Temperature Warning Lamp

The engine coolant temperature lamp turns on to warn the driver of high coolant temperature. With the ignition switch is in the RUN or START position, the voltage from the fuse block is applied to the lamp. In the START position the lamp circuit receives ground through the ignition switch so that the bulb can be tested. In the RUN position current through the bulb can be grounded through the coolant temperature switch.

Fasten Seat Belt Indicator Lamp

When the key is turned to the RUN or START position a chime will come on for about 8 seconds which reminds people to fasten their seat belts. The safety belt lamp will also come on and stay on for about 4 seconds, then will flash for about 60 seconds. If the driver's belt is already buckled neither the chime nor the lamp will activate.

Foglamp Indicator Lamp

This lamp will illuminate when the foglamp switch has been depressed and the foglamps are illuminated. This foglamps will only work when the parking lamps and/or the headlamps are operating.

Fuel Cap Missing Warning Lamp

The FUEL CAP warning lamp will illuminate and start to flash, when the engine management system detects a leak in the fuel tank during the first drive cycle. This would be directly related to a fuel cap that is not fully tightened, is missing or improperly installed. The engine control module (ECM) controls the illumination of the fuel cap warning lamp. The lamp will continue to flash until the following occurs.

    • The engine is stopped.
    • Another fault is detected during the same drive cycle that is not related to leak detection.

The fuel cap warning lamp does not flash when the same fuel tank leak is detected during second drive cycle. The CHECK ENGINE lamp will illuminate when a leak is detected during the second drive cycle. There are no DTCs associated with the illumination of the fuel cap warning lamp.

Low Coolant Warning Lamp

The low coolant warning indicator lamp operation is controlled by the low coolant switch located in the reservoir. The switch will ground the indicator lamp circuit whenever the coolant level is low.

Low Fuel Warning Lamp

The low fuel indicator lamp will illuminate when the fuel level in the fuel tank is low (about two gallons) and when the ignition switch is first turned to the RUN position. After a few seconds the lamp will go out even if the ignition switch remains in the RUN position.

Low Oil Level Indicator Lamp

This indicator lamp illuminates for a few seconds when the ignition is turned to the ON position.

The low oil level indicator lamp is controlled by the engine oil level sensor. The sensor consists of a floating device and a reed contact that is normally switched to ground when the oil level is in the normal operating range. When the oil level goes below the minimum level, as indicated on the oil level dipstick, the reed contacts open signaling the gauge cluster to ground the indicator bulb. The indicator bulb will illuminate only after the reed contacts are open approximately 2 minutes or longer. The bulb stays illuminated for approximately 1 minute or longer depending on how long the reed contacts stay open.

Low Oil Pressure Warning Lamp

The low oil pressure lamp turns on to warn the driver when the engine oil pressure is low. Battery voltage is applied to one side of the bulb. A ground path is provided by the engine oil pressure switch which closes when the oil pressure is below 28 kPa (4 psi). This tests the bulb when the ignition switch is turned to the RUN or START position. After the engine starts and normal oil pressure builds up, the engine oil pressure switch opens and the lamp goes out.

SECURITY Indicator Lamp

The SECURITY lamp will flash intermittently when the doors are opened during the arming of the universal theft-deterrent system, which reminds the driver to lock the doors and arm the system. The lamp will go off after the doors have been closed.

SIR Indicator Lamp

The AIR BAG indicator lamp will light to warn the driver of a potential Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system problem that could prevent the proper deployment of the air bag in an accident. When the ignition switch is turned to the RUN position (engine not started) the AIR BAG will flash seven times. When the ignition switch is turned to the START position the AIR BAG lamp will stay on (solid light). When the ignition switch is turned back to the RUN position (engine running) the light will flash seven times then go out. If the light stays on the SIR system must be repaired as soon as possible because the air bags will not deploy during an accident. A scan too can be used to read trouble codes remaining in the history memory of the Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) and to clear all history codes after repair. The second AIR BAG lamp is a redundant lamp and will only illuminate when the first lamp fails to operate. For additional information including service precautions refer to Supplemental Inflatable Restraints.

Sport/Economy Mode Indicator Lamp

This indicator lamp illuminates when the vehicle has been put into the sport mode by pressing the S button on the gear selector. When this lamp is illuminated the vehicle will have slightly firmer shifts and increased performance for part and full throttle situations. This lamp should only illuminate when the sport mode is selected and will not illuminate upon startup.

Sport Mode Indicator Lamp and Automatic Transmission Warning Lamp (2nd Design)

The sport mode indicator lamp illuminates when the vehicle has been put into the sport mode by pressing the S button on the gear selector. When this lamp is illuminated the vehicle will have slightly firmer shifts and increased performance for part and full throttle situations. This lamp should only illuminate when the sport mode is selected and will not illuminate upon startup.

This lamp will also flash when there may be a problem with the automatic transmission. The transmission control module (TCM) performs a continual self diagnosis of certain control functions. The lamp will flash only when an error is detected. The TCM will store in memory a current and/or history trouble code when a problem is detected.

Windshield Washer Solvent Level Indicator Lamp

The windshield washer solvent container contains a switch which closes when the washer solvent level becomes low. This lamp illuminates when the ignition is in the RUN position and when the windshield washer fluid solvent container is less than 1/3 full.

Warning/Reminder Chimes

The seat belt and ignition key and lamps and turn signal alarm sounds a chime to bring attention to one or more of several conditions. These conditions are:

    • The headlamp switch is on and the ignition switch is not in the RUN or START position.
    • The ignition key is in the ignition switch when the driver's door is open.
    • The driver seat belt is unbuckled when the ignition switch is in the RUN or START position.

Voltage is applied at all times through the fuse block to power the alarm. These alarm/chimes are integral to the instrument cluster and replacement is required replace the appropriate the gauge module.

Ignition Key Warning

Whenever the key is in the ignition switch and the driver's door is open the alarm receives a key reminder input. This sounds the alarm.

Fasten Seat Belt Warning

With the ignition switch in the RUN or START position voltage is applied through the fuse block to the alarm. With the driver seat belt unbuckled the alarm is grounded through the seat belt switch. The FASTEN BELTS indicator always goes on for 4 to 8 seconds when the ignition switch is turned to the RUN or START position. The fasten belts alarm however only sounds if the driver seat belt is unbuckled and the ignition switch is in the RUN or START position.

Lights ON Warning

When the headlamp switch is pulled out to the first or second detent voltage is applied to the alarm. When the ignition switch is in the RUN or START position ignition voltage is applied through the instrument panel fuse block to the alarm. These two voltages are sensed and the alarm is not sounded. When the ignition switch is not in the RUN or START position the alarm loses ignition voltage. The alarm senses the change. voltage is still available through a battery feed (hot at all times) lead and is applied to sound the alarm. The alarm can be turned off by turning the headlamp switch to the OFF position. The alarm no longer senses voltage from the headlamp switch so the alarm does not sound.
