Installation Procedure

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Thread the outer tie rod to the adjuster using the same number of turns as required for the removal.
  2. Tighten
Tighten the rear tie rod adjuster nut to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  3. Install the outer tie rod to the rear lower control arm.
  4. Install J 42089 to the tie rod ball stud.
  5. Tighten
Tighten J 42089 to 30 N·m (22 lb ft) in order to seat the ball stud taper.

  6. Remove J 42089 from the tie rod ball stud.
  7. Important: Use a new self-locking tie rod nut.
