Subject: | Air Bag Indicator is on DTC 52 in SDM |
Models: | 1997- 2001 Cadillac Catera |
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
The AIR BAG indicator is ON, and DTC 52 sets after the SDM has been replaced.
The replacement inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic and seat belt pretensioner module (SDM) must be programmed for use in the vehicle using a scan tool. Depending on the vehicle model year and options, the SDM may be programmed for one of the two following configurations:
• | Driver & Pass -- If the vehicle is equipped with frontal air bags and seat belt pretensioners. |
• | Driver Pass & Side -- If the vehicle is equipped with frontal air bags, side air bags and seat belt pretensioners. |
To program the replacement SDM, select the Programming option from the SIR menu on the Tech 2. Choose the correct configuration when prompted by the scan tool. The SDM may only be programmed once. It is NOT reprogrammable.
Important: The SDM configuration will fail if one of the deployment loop resistances is not within normal range. The pretensioners (if equipped) are commonly overlooked when repairing a vehicle after a collision. The configuration will fail if one of the pretensioners have deployed and but not replaced. Deployed pretensioners will have a ribbon or "flag" visible indicating they are expended.
Note: The Tech 2 Data Display will read 0 Ohms for all deployment loops until SDM programming is complete.
If the SDM programming failed when selecting the correct equipment configuration, back date the Tech2 software to version 26.010 and perform the SDM programming again. Use the following steps in TIS2Web to accomplish this:
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
