Is the Tachometer inoperative?

  1. Install the scan tool.
  2. Select SPECIAL FUNCTIONS from the INSTURMENT CLUSTER menu.
  3. Command the Tachometer from 7,000 RPMs to 0 RPMs and then back up again.

Does the Tachometer respond when commanded?

Is the Tachometer inaccurate?

Locate and repair an open in the tach signal circuit between the Engine Control Module (ECM) and the instrument cluster.

Is the repair complete?

Replace the instrument cluster.

Is the replacement complete?

  1. Install the scan tool.
  2. Select ENGINE SPEED from the data list and record the RPM reading.
  3. Compare the recorded RPM reading to the displayed RPM reading on the instrument cluster tachometer.

Are both readings approximately the same?
