DEFINITION: The engine oil pressure gauge is inoperative and the oil pressure is normal.

Did you test the engine oil pressure?

  1. Disconnect connector C2 from the engine oil pressure gauge switch.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Measure the voltage at connector C2 terminal 1.

Does the voltage measure near the specified value?

12 V

Go to Step 3

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Connect a signal generator tool to connector C2 terminal 1. (If a signal generator tool is not available, use a resistor or an adjustable rheostat.)
  3. Dial in approximately 175 to 200 ohms.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  5. Observe the engine oil pressure gauge needle.

Does the needle move towards the 60 - 80 psi area on the engine oil pressure gauge?

Test the circuit between the engine oil pressure gauge switch connector C2 terminal 1 and gauge cluster connector terminal 26 for an open. Refer to Testing for Continuity in Wiring Systems.

Replace the engine oil pressure gauge switch.

Inspect for poor connections at the gauge cluster connector. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

  1. Connect all connectors and components that were removed in previous steps.
  2. Verify that the engine oil pressure gauge operates properly.

Does the engine oil pressure gauge operate properly?

Replace the gauge cluster.
