GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

The remote keyless entry (RKE) feature operates the following from the outside the vehicle:

    • The door locks
    • The fuel filler door
    • The interior lighting
    • The trunk release

The RKE system consists of the following components:

    • The body control module (BCM)
    • The transmitters

Object Number: 160884 Size: SH

When you press a button on a transmitter, the transmitter sends a signal to the BCM. The BCM interprets the signal and activates the requested function.

Unlock Driver's Door Only

Momentarily press the UNLOCK button in order to perform the following functions:

    • Unlock the driver's door only.
    • Illuminate the interior lamps for approximately 20 seconds or until the ignition is turned ON (if the sun sensor senses sufficient darkness).
    • Flash the park lamps.
    • Disarm the content theft deterrent (CTD) system (if equipped).

Unlock All Doors (Second Operation)

Momentarily press the UNLOCK button a second time (within 5 seconds of the first press) in order to perform the following functions:

    • Unlock the remaining doors.
    • Illuminate the interior lamps for approximately 20 seconds or until the ignition is turned ON (if the sun sensor senses sufficient darkness).
    • Flash the park lamps.
    • [Chirp the horn (if selected ON in personalization).]

Lock All Doors

Press the LOCK button in order to perform the following functions:

    • Lock all of the doors, including the fuel door.
    • Flash the interior lamps.
    • Flash the park lamps.
    • [Chirp the horn (if selected ON in personalization).]
    • Arm the content theft deterrent (CTD) system (if equipped).

Rear Compartment Lid Release

If the vehicle transaxle is in PARK or NEUTRAL, a single press of the rear compartment release button will open the rear compartment lid. The interior lamps will not illuminate.

Fuel Door Release

If the vehicle transaxle is in PARK or NEUTRAL, a single press of the fuel door release button will unlock the fuel door.

Automatic Door Unlock

Personalization of the RKE

The automatic door unlock feature enables under the following conditions:

    • The ignition switch is in the RUN position.
    • All the vehicle doors are closed.
    • The vehicle shifts into the PARK position.

The BCM receives a signal from the RFA to either enable or disable the automatic door unlock feature. Use one of the following two different ways to program the automatic door unlock feature:

    • Use the option register (the dealership uses a scan tool to program the automatic door unlock feature) to enable or disable the automatic door unlock feature for all FOBs together.
    • The BCM is able to differentiate between up to 4 FOBs.
    • Perform the following steps to program the automatic door unlock feature using the FOBs:
        1. Ensure the ignition switch is in the RUN position.
        2. Ensure the gear shift lever is in the PARK position.
        3. Press the brake pedal for the entire duration of the procedure.
        4. Press the transmitter UNLOCK button 4 times within 5 seconds to disable the automatic door unlock feature.
        5. Press the transmitter LOCK button 4 times within 5 seconds to enable the automatic door unlock feature.

Visual Confirmation Feature

Object Number: 159501 Size: SH
(1)Headlamps
(2)Parklamps
(3)Cornering Lamps
(4)Fog Lamps

The BCM cycles the park lamp relay once for visual confirmation of the LOCK function when the power door LOCK command is initiated by the RKE system. The BCM cycles the park lamp relay twice for visual confirmation of the UNLOCK function when the power door UNLOCK command is initiated by the RKE system. This feedback interrupts the current commanded state of the park lamps (2) if operating with the ignition in the LOCK/OFF position; then, cycle the park lamps and restore them to the current commanded state. Thus, the lights will sequence OFF, then go back to normal ON operation if the park lamps are in ON position. The lights will sequence ON, then go back to normal OFF operation if the park lamps are in the OFF position. The RKE park lamp flash sequence of the LOCK command (one cycle) completes when an UNLOCK signal initiates immediately after a LOCK signal. Upon the LOCK park lamp cycle completion, the UNLOCK flash sequence (twice) executes and vice versa.

Automatic Door Lock (ADL) Feature

Personalization of the RKE

The automatic door lock feature enables under the following conditions:

    • The ignition switch is in the RUN position.
    • All the vehicle doors are CLOSED.
    • The vehicle shifts out of the PARK position.

The BCM receives a signal from the RFA to either enable or disable the automatic door lock feature. Use one of the following two different ways to program the automatic door lock feature:

    • Use the option register (the dealership uses a scan tool to program the automatic door lock feature) to enable or disable the automatic door lock feature for all FOBs together only.
    • The BCM is able to differentiate between up to 4 FOBs.
    • Perform the following steps to program the automatic door lock feature using the FOBs:
        1. Ensure the ignition switch is in the RUN position.
        2. Ensure the gear shift lever is in the PARK position.
        3. Press the brake pedal for the entire duration of the procedure.
        4. Press the transmitter UNLOCK button 4 times within 5 seconds to disable the automatic door lock feature.
        5. Press the transmitter LOCK button 4 times within 5 seconds to enable the automatic door lock feature.

Central Door Unlocking Feature

The remote function actuator (RFA) controls the central door unlocking feature through the body control module (BCM). Central door unlocking allows the driver's door to unlock with the use of the key in the driver side front door key cylinder. Hold the key in the unlock position for more than 1.5 seconds to unlock all remaining doors.

Anti-Lockout Feature

The body control module (BCM) inhibits the activation of the power door lock feature actuated by the power door lock button or RFA switch active message when the key is in the ignition cylinder and/or the ignition turns to the RUN position or the START position with any door open. Continuous actuation of the power door lock button for 3 seconds overrides this feature. The BCM continues to prevent door to lock upon wake-up by door lock command from the discrete input if all the conditions are met for anti-lockout. The anti-lockout feature takes precedence over the automatic door lock functions. The doors will not lock if the automatic door lock function is enabled when the anti-lockout feature is active with the gear selector out of the PARK position. The BCM shuts down after the door closes or the BCM shuts down after 10 minutes if the key is left in the ignition switch with the door left open. The outputs controlling the following functions de-energize at power up or during a running reset to prevent inadvertent locking of the vehicle doors:

    • The LOCK function
    • The UNLOCK function
    • The fuel filler door function
