    • J 42089 Steering Linkage Installer

Removal Procedure

    Caution: To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle at the opposite end from which components are being removed. This will reduce the possibility of the vehicle falling off the hoist.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General information.

  2. Object Number: 205676  Size: SH
  3. Remove the outer tie rod nut from the lower control arm.
  4. Use the J 6627-A to remove the outer tie rod from the rear lower control arm.
  5. Loosen the rear tie rod adjuster nut to allow for outer tie rod removal.
  6. Important: Count the turns required for removal of the tie rod for re-assembly purposes.

  7. Remove the outer tie rod from the adjuster.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Thread the outer tie rod to the adjuster the same number of turn as was required during the removal.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the rear tie rod adjuster nut to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  3. Install the outer tie rod to the rear lower control arm.
  4. Install the J 42089 to the tie rod ball stud.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten theJ 42089 to 30 N·m (22 lb ft) to allow the ball stud taper to seat.

  6. Remove the J 42089 from the tie rod ball stud.
  7. Important: Use a new self-locking tie rod nut.

  8. Install the outer tie rod nut to the rear lower control arm.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the outer tie rod nut to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Adjust the rear toe to specification. Refer to Rear Toe Adjustment in Wheel Alignment.
