- Use the cover bolts to install the J 42149
onto the rear axle housing cover surface.
Lightly seat the bolts.
- Install the J 42149
between the side bearing race and the J 42143
.
- Install the J 8001
onto the J 42143
with the indicator button resting on the ring gear surface.
- Install the differential carrier with the bearing races into the
rear axle housing.
- Install the left adjuster
ring.
Important: The differential side bearing preload is achieved through adjusting
rings of varying thickness installed on the right side bearing.
- Install right adjuster rings of various thickness until there
is zero movement of the differential carrier detected on the J 8001
.
- Add an additional 0.125 mm (0.005 in) to each side
in the adjuster ring thickness once the zero carrier movement is achieved.
Note the total preload on bearings is 0.25 mm (0.010 in).
The side bearing preload is now correctly established.
Important: If it is necessary to vary the adjuster ring thickness, the same total
thickness between the left and right adjuster rings must be maintained. Therefore,
the identical shim thickness must be added to the opposite side from which
it is removed.
- Install the J 42178
to the differential.
- Inspect the rotating torque of the carrier with lubricated bearings:
Specification
0.6-0.7 N·m (5-6 lb in).
- Remove the J 42178
from the differential.
