Circuit Description

When the ignition is turned ON, the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic (SDM) performs continuous diagnostic tests to check for proper circuit continuity and for shorts to ground or voltage. If a malfunction is detected, the SDM will store a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

Conditions for Running the DTC

Ignition 1 voltage is within the normal operating voltage range.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The following criteria will cause the SDM to set the DTC:

    • One steering wheel module or IP module deployment commanded.
    • Three seat belt pretensioner only deployments commanded.
    • Three side impact module - LF deployments commanded.
    • Three side impact module - RF deployments commanded.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

The SDM turns the AIR BAG indicator ON.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC 56 is latched. You cannot clear a latched DTC. Replace the SDM after following the instructions in the diagnostic table.

Diagnostic Aids

The SDM is capable of only one steering wheel or IP module deployment command, three side impact module deployment commands, and three pretensioner only deployment commands. Once any one of these three criteria have been met, the SDM requires replacement.
