It is important to be aware of other vehicle systems and conditions while road testing complaint vehicles which may affect the brake system or generate brake complaints. Be particularly aware of conditions which may cause the car to lead or pull to one side while driving without the brakes applied. Conditions which may contribute to vehicle pull/lead or may be mistaken for brake system conditions include:

  1. Inspect the tires
  2. • If a lead/pull condition occurs. Refer to Radial Tire Lead/Pull Correction for tire-related lead/pull diagnosis.
    • If uneven traction occurs. Tires having unequal contact and grip on the road will cause unequal braking. Tires must be equally inflated and the tread pattern of right and left tires must be approximately equal.
  3. Inspect the front end alignment
  4. • If misalignment of the front end occurs particularly with regard to camber, will cause the car to pull to one side.
    • If misalignment of the front end occurs particularly with regard to caster, will cause the car to pull to one side.
  5. Inspect for abnormal vehicle loading.
  6. • On a car with unequal loading, the most heavily loaded wheels require more braking power than others.
    • A heavily loaded car sometimes requires more braking effort.
