Emergency Release Lever Check
Inspect the operation of the front seat emergency release lever as directed
in the In-Vehicle Check procedure or the Out Of-Vehicle Check procedure.
Inspect the emergency release lever by lifting the lever to the full
up position, then release the lever. The lever must return to the full-down
position with no evidence of binding or interference. Replace the inertia
lock assembly as needed.
Repeat the inspection after the installation.
In-Vehicle Check
- Buckle the driver in the restraint system.
- Buckle an assistant in a restraint system in the rear seat.
- Ask the assistant to hold the sides of the passenger seat back,
near the top of the seat back, with arms stiff and body relaxed.
- Drive the vehicle forward a speed of 16-24 km/h (10-15 mph).
Important: Stop the vehicle as quickly as possible without skidding the wheels.
- Quickly apply the brakes.
- Ensure that the seat back inertia lock engages at the first locking
position.
- Ensure that the top of the seat back does not move forward more
than 50 mm (2 in). The driver should lean slightly forward,
when performing this operation on the driver seat back.
- Perform the following Out-Of-Vehicle Check, if either the driver
or the passenger seat back lock does not engage in the first locking position.
Out-of Vehicle-Check
- Position the seat back in the normal upright position, if the
seat is equipped with reclining seat backs.
- Remove the seat assembly from the vehicle.
- Place the seat assembly upright on a clean surface.
- Raise the rear of the seat until the seat back is 6 degrees
forward of the vertical position. In order to hold the seat in this position,
place the blocks under the rear of the seat .
In order to properly adjust to this angle, use an angle meter. Purchase
an angle meter at a local hardware or department store.
- Perform the following procedure in order to Inspect the seat back
lock:
5.1. | Manually apply enough rearward pressure to the top of the seat
back until the hinge arm firmly touches the rearward position stop. Position
the back in the normal upright position. |
5.2. | Manually attempt to move the seat back forward, with hand pressure
at the top of the seat back. Ensure that the seat back is locked and does
not move forward more than 50 mm (2 in). |
5.3. | Lift the emergency release lever using finger pressure. The seat
back should release and pivot forward. |
5.4. | Visually inspect that the emergency release lever returns to the
normal position. |
5.5. | In order to return the seat back against the stop in the normal
upright position, manually apply enough rearward pressure. Reapply forward
pressure when inspecting for relock. |
5.6. | When the lock does not engage, or the release lever does not return
to the normal position, remove and install with a new assembly. |
- Verify that the lock hook lever inside the lock swings freely
prior to installation, if installing a new lock. Inspect the lock in the above
steps after installation.
