Column Shifter Components

When the vehicle is equipped with the transmission gear shift mounted on the steering column, the auto trans shift lock control is comprised of the following components:

    • The auto trans shift lock control actuator within the steering column used to lock the gear shift lever.
    • The brake-pedal mounted stoplamp/auto trans shift lock control switch. This switch is used to enable/disable the shift lock control actuator.
    • The Park Relay located in the rear fuse block.
    • The control circuitry which establishes the conditions for operation of the auto trans shift lock control system.

Column Shifter Operation

The auto trans shift lock control is a safety circuit that prevents the vehicle from being shifted out of Park when the ignition is ON but the brakes are not applied. To accomplish this, the steering column is equipped with an auto trans shift lock actuator. This actuator, when energized, physically blocks the gear shift lever from moving out of Park when the ignition is ON, until the brake pedal is pressed. When the brake pedal is pressed, the shift actuator is de-energized, allowing the gear shifter to be moved out of Park.

Console Shifter Components (DTS)

When the vehicle is equipped with the transmission gear shift mounted in the floor console, the auto trans shift lock control is comprised of the following components:

    • An auto trans shift lock control actuator assembly (with internal relay) mounted in the floor console and used to lock the gear shift lever.
    • The brake-pedal mounted stoplamp/auto trans shift lock control switch. This switch is used to enable/disable the shift lock control actuator.
    • The Park Lock Relay located in the rear fuse block.
    • The control circuitry which establishes the conditions for operation of the auto trans shift lock control system.

In addition, the floor mounted console shifter also uses the Ignition 3 Relay located in the rear fuse block to control the auto trans shift lock operation.

Console Shifter Operation (DTS)

The auto trans shift lock control system for vehicles with the console shifter acts to perform the same function as the one for the column shifter does. It too is a safety circuit that prevents the vehicle from being shifted out of PARK when the ignition is ON and the brakes are not applied. However, its' actuator accomplishes this in a manner that is the reverse of the column shifter. This actuator, is denergized to physically block the gear shift lever from moving out of PARK when the ignition is ON and the brakes are not applied. When the brake pedal is pressed, the shift actuator is energized, allowing the gear shifter to be moved. The way it does this is discussed in greater detail in the auto trans shift lock control circuit description.

Reverse Lockout Control System (DTS)

When the vehicle is equipped with the transmission gear shifter mounted in the floor console, it has a reverse lockout control system as an additional safety feature. The reverse lockout control system is comprised of the following components:.

    • The Reverse Lockout Actuator mounted on the shifter assembly within the floor console.
    • The Reverse Lockout Relay located in the rear fuse block.

Reverse Lockout Control System Operation (DTS)

The reverse lock out actuators' job is to prevent the console gear shifter from being accidently bumped into Reverse from the Drive, Drive 1, Drive 2, Drive 3, or Neutral transmission positions when the vehicle is traveling at over 5 mph for 15 seconds or longer and the ignition is ON.
