Test Description

The Number(s) below refer to the step number(s) on the diagnostic table.

  1. Determines if the technician is using the right diagnostic chart.

  2. Checks to see that the door module associated with the inoperative window recognizes the switch input and will attempt to send a command to the window motor.

  3. Eliminates the module window supply and ground circuits as the cause.

  4. Determines if the window motor drive circuits or the window motor are the cause of the malfunction.

  5. Eliminates the window switch as the cause of the malfunction.

  6. Eliminates the switch ground circuit as the cause.

  7. Eliminates the switch signal circuit as the cause.

Did you Perform A Diagnostic System Check - Power Door Systems?

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Attempt to operate the power windows from both the driver door switch assembly, and from each one of the power window switches mounted to the passenger doors.

Does any window operate?

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
  3. With the scan tool, select the Door Window Test Special Functions Output Control of the door module associated with the window that did not operate.
  4. With the scan tool, command the window that did not operate to move UP and DOWN.

Does the window move up when commanding UP and down when commanding DOWN?

  1. With the scan tool, observe the Window Switch Inputs parameter in the Data list of the door module that is associated with the window that did not operate (For the driver door window, use the Inputs list of the Driver Door Switch).
  2. Activate the passenger door window switch of the window that did not operate (for an inoperative driver door window, use the switch that is part of the driver door switch assembly).

Did the Window Inputs parameter change from the Idle state to the Up, Down, and Express Down states as expected?

Is the inoperative window the driver door window?

--

  1. With the scan tool, observe the Window Motor parameter in the Outputs list of the door module associated with the window that did not operate.
  2. Activate the passenger door window switch that is associated with the window that did not operate (For an inoperative driver door window, use the the window switch that is part of the driver door switch assembly).

Did the Outputs parameter change from the Idle state to the Up and Down states?

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect the 4 pin harness connector from the door module that is associated with the inoperative window.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive window voltage circuit and the window ground circuit of the connector.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Reconnect the 4 pin harness connector.
  3. Disconnect the 2 pin harness connector of the window motor that is associated with the inoperative window.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  5. Connect a test lamp between the two motor drive circuits of the connector.
  6. Activate the window switch associated with the inoperative window.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Test the module battery positive window voltage circuit for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the open ground circuit of the module. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the motor drive circuits of the inoperative window for shorts to ground, shorts to each other, and opens. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect the power window switch harness connector of the window that did not operate.
  3. Install a 3 amp fused jumper in the harness connector, between the switch ground circuit and the signal circuit of the window state that did not respond.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Does the power window switch parameter indicate the missing state?

Test the ground circuit, of the inoperative switch, for an open circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the signal circuit, of the inoperative window state to the inoperative switch, for an open circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections/terminal tension at the inoperative power window switch harness connector (For the driver door window, this would be the driver door switch assembly harness connector). Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections/terminal tension at the window motor harness connector. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the inoperative power window switch (For the driver door window, this would be the driver door switch assembly). Refer to Rear Side Door Window Switch Replacement or Front Door Switch Replacement .

Replace the window motor for the window that does not operate. Refer to Front Side Door Window Regulator Replacement or Rear Side Door Window Regulator Replacement .
