SQUEAK FROM STG. COLUMN (REPLACE CLOSE-OUT SEAL)

SUBJECT: SQUEAK FROM STEERING COLUMN WHEN MOVING THE SHIFT LEVER (REPLACE CLOSE-OUT SEAL)

MODELS: 1992-93 CADILLAC ELDORADO 1992-93 CADILLAC SEVILLE (WITH STEERING COLUMN MOUNTED SHIFT LEVERS)

SOME OWNERS MAY EXPERIENCE SQUEAK NOISE WHEN MOVING THE SHIFT LEVER. THIS CONDITION MAY BE CAUSED BY THE STEERING COLUMN TO I/P CLOSE-OUT SEAL. TO REPAIR THIS CONDITION REPLACE THE SEAL WITH A NEW SEAL, P/N 3545630, USING THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE:

NOTICE: THE STEERING COLUMN SHOULD NEVER BE SUPPORTED BY THE LOWER SUPPORT BRACKET ALONE; DAMAGE TO THE COLUMN LOWER BEARING ADAPTER MAY RESULT.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT:

O TURN IGNITION SWITCH TO "OFF".

1. SIR FUSE FROM ENGINE COMPARTMENT FUSE PANEL.

2. BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE.

3. TWO SCREWS SECURING LEFT-SIDE SOUND INSULATOR.

4. CONNECTOR FOR COURTESY LAMP AND LEFT-SIDE SOUND INSULATOR FROM VEHICLE.

5. CONNECTOR POSITION ASSURANCE (CPA) AND YELLOW TWO-WAY CONNECTOR AT THE BASE OF THE STEERING COLUMN.

6. FILLER TRIM BY GRASPING AT FRONT AND REAR EDGES AND PULLING DOWNWARD.

IMPORTANT: THE FILLER TRIM SHOULD BE REPLACED, NOT REPAIRED, IF THERE IS ANY VISIBLE DAMAGE.

7. STEERING COLUMN OPENING BRACKET.

8. SEPARATE CLOSE-OUT SEAL AT THE BOTTOM BY PULLING APART.

9. LOWER SUPPORT BRACKET FROM VEHICLE (TWO BOLTS).

10. UPPER COLUMN SUPPORT BRACKET FROM I/P (TWO BOLTS) AND LOWER COLUMN.

11. COLUMN CLOSE-OUT SEAL.

INSTALL OR CONNECT:

1. COLUMN CLOSE-OUT SEAL.

2. TWO BOLTS TO UPPER COLUMN SUPPORT BRACKET. DO NOT TIGHTEN FULLY AT THIS TIME.

3. TWO BOLTS TO LOWER COLUMN SUPPORT BRACKET. DO NOT TIGHTEN FULLY AT THIS TIME.

TIGHTEN:

O ALIGN COLUMN TO INSTRUMENT PANEL OPENING. O UPPER AND LOWER COLUMN SUPPORT BRACKET BOLTS TO 27 N.M (20 LBS. FT.).

4. ATTACH BOTTOM OF THE CLOSE-OUT SEAL.

5. STEERING COLUMN OPENING BRACKET.

6. FILLER TRIM BY LINING UP FOUR RETAINING CLIPS WITH SLOTS IN OPENING BRACKET AND PUSHING INTO PLACE.

7. BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE.

8. SIR FUSE TO ENGINE COMPARTMENT FUSE PANEL.

9. YELLOW TWO-WAY CONNECTOR AND CONNECTOR POSITION ASSURANCE (CPA).

10. COURTESY LAMP CONNECTOR AND SCREWS SECURING LEFT-SIDE SOUND INSULATOR.

11. PERFORM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE. REFER TO SECTION 6C OF THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE INFORMATION MANUAL.

PARTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE AVAILABLE ON SEPTEMBER 20, 1993.
