SOME 1992-1993 ELDORADOS AND SEVILLES MAY EXPERIENCE COMMENTS OF THE GLOVE BOX DOOR BEING HARD TO CLOSE. THIS CONDITION MAY BE CAUSED BY INTERFERENCE BETWEEN THE CENTER OF THE GLOVE BOX DOOR AND THE LEFT-HAND INSTRUMENT PANEL WOOD TRIM. TO REPAIR THIS CONDITION USE THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE.
STEP A - ADJUST GLOVE BOX DOOR GAP:
PRIOR TO MAKING ADJUSTMENTS TO REDUCE GLOVE BOX DOOR CLOSING EFFORTS, FIRST CLOSE THE GLOVE BOX DOOR AND INSPECT THE GAP BETWEEN THE TOP EDGE OF THE GLOVE BOX DOOR AND THE BOTTOM EDGE OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WOOD TRIM PLATE. THIS GAP SHOULD BE EVEN AND NO WIDER THAN APPROXIMATELY 3MM. IF GAP IS ACCEPTABLE, PROCEED TO "STEP B - REMOVE RUBBER SLAM BUMPERS" BELOW. IF GAP IS EXCESSIVELY WIDE OR UNEVEN, ADJUST GAP USING THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE:
1. OPEN GLOVE BOX DOOR AND REMOVE THE GLOVE BOX DOOR INNER PANEL (SEVEN SCREWS). REFER TO FIGURE 1.
2. LOOSEN, BUT DO NOT REMOVE, THE FOUR SCREWS HOLDING THE GLOVE BOX DOOR TO ITS HINGE AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 1.
3. REPOSITION THE GLOVE BOX DOOR ON THE HINGE TO COMPENSATE FOR THE GAP TO THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WOOD TRIM. TIGHTEN GLOVE BOX DOOR HINGE SCREWS, CLOSE THE GLOVE BOX DOOR, AND INSPECT GAP. IF GAP REMAINS UNACCEPTABLE, AGAIN LOOSEN HINGE SCREWS AND ATTEMPT TO REPOSITION DOOR. IF NECESSARY, REMOVE DOOR FROM HINGE AND SLIGHTLY ENLARGE HINGE HOLES WITH A RAT-TAIL FILE TO ACHIEVE SUFFICIENT ADJUSTMENT.
4. WHEN CORRECT ADJUSTMENT IS ACHIEVED, TIGHTEN ALL GLOVE BOX DOOR SCREWS AND INSTALL THE GLOVE BOX DOOR INNER PANEL.
5. CHECK GLOVE BOX DOOR CLOSING EFFORT. IF CLOSING EFFORT IS STILL UNACCEPTABLE, PROCEED TO STEP B BELOW.
STEP B - REMOVE RUBBER SLAM BUMPERS:
1. REMOVE PRESS-IN RUBBER SLAM BUMPERS LOCATED IN THE UPPER LEFT-HAND AND RIGHT-HAND CORNERS OF THE GLOVE BOX BIN. 2. CUT TWO SMALL PATCHES OF VELCRO(R) PILE AND GLUE IN POSITION OVER THE EXISTING GLOVE BOX BIN HOLES FROM WHICH THE RUBBER BUMPERS WERE REMOVED. ENSURE THAT VELCRO(R) PATCHES ARE SECURELY ATTACHED TO THE GLOVE BOX BIN IN ORDER TO PREVENT AN UNSIGHTLY HOLE APPEARANCE AT A LATER POINT IN TIME.
3. EVALUATE GLOVE BOX DOOR CLOSING EFFORT. IF CLOSING EFFORT REMAINS UNACCEPTABLE, PROCEED TO STEP C BELOW.
STEP C - REPOSITION INSTRUMENT PANEL WOOD TRIM:
1. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL TOP COVER. FIRST REMOVE ALL FOUR INSTRUMENT PANEL A/C OUTLETS AND THE FOUR SCREWS AT THE REAR OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL TOP COVER (ACCESSIBLE THROUGH THE A/C OUTLET OPENINGS). ADDITIONALLY, REMOVE THE DEFROSTER GRILLE AND THE THREE SCREWS AT THE FRONT OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL TOP COVER (ACCESSIBLE UNDERNEATH THE DEFROSTER GRILLE). REFER TO SERVICE INFORMATION MANUAL SECTION 8C AND FIGURE 2.
2. REMOVE THE TWO INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER MOUNTING SCREWS AND REPOSITION THE CLUSTER TO GAIN ACCESS TO MOUNTING SCREW FOR THE RIGHT-HAND INSTRUMENT PANEL WOOD TRIM. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO UNPLUG ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS AT THE CLUSTER.
3. THE RIGHT-HAND INSTRUMENT PANEL WOOD TRIM PLATE IS RETAINED TO THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CARRIER USING TWO MOUNTING SCREWS AND TWO PATCHES OF DUAL-LOCK FASTENER (SIMILAR TO VELCRO(R). REMOVE THE MOUNTING SCREWS AND DISENGAGE THE DUAL-LOCK BY CAREFULLY PRYING THE WOOD TRIM PANEL AWAY FROM THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CARRIER.
4. CAREFULLY REPOSITION THE TRIM PLATE UPWARD AND FORWARD IN CAR TO ALLOW ADDITIONAL CLEARANCE FOR THE GLOVE BOX DOOR. ENGAGE THE DUAL-LOCK PATCHES BY USING YOUR HANDS TO PRESS THE WOOD TRIM PANEL AGAINST THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CARRIER DIRECTLY OVER THE DUAL-LOCK PATCHES. TIGHTEN THE WOOD TRIM MOUNTING SCREWS.
5. CHECK GLOVE BOX DOOR CLOSING EFFORT. IF NECESSARY, AGAIN LOOSEN INSTRUMENT PANEL WOOD TRIM MOUNTING SCREWS AND REPOSITION TRIM PANEL. CHECK CLOSING EFFORT AND REPEAT ADJUSTMENT PROCESS UNTIL AN ACCEPTABLE GLOVE BOX DOOR CLOSING EFFORT IS ACHIEVED.
6. TIGHTEN WOOD TRIM PLATE MOUNTING SCREWS, INSTALL CLUSTER, INSTRUMENT PANEL TOP COVER, DEFROSTER GRILLE, AND INSTRUMENT PANEL A/C OUTLETS.
