Some 1992 Eldorados and Sevilles built before VIN breakpoints # 601716 and # 803793 respectively may experience a condition of deck lid opening too fast and/or high closing effort. This condition may be caused by excessive hinge spring tension.
To correct this condition replace the deck lid springs. Eldorado spring P/N is 3535696 and Seville spring P/N is 3535697 (two springs per car are required). Install per the following procedure:
1. Support deck lid to avoid dropping during adjustment.
2. Remove trunk trim side panels in order to access spring location bracket.
3. Disconnect spring at hinge bracket and at rear compartment bracket.
4. New springs are to be installed in the most rearward notch on the hinge detent bracket.
5. Attach rear end of spring to rear compartment spring brackets located under the deck lid gutter.
6. Repeat this procedure on the opposite side.
7. Adjust the spring tension by using the three selective spring attachment detent locations on the deck lid hinge bracket. Start with the springs in the rearmost position, and adjust forward as required until the deck lid raises to the full open position by relocating one spring at a time.
8. Reinstall side panel trunk trim.
Parts are currently available from CANSPO.
For vehicles being repaired under warranty purposes, .3 hours for the right side and .3 hours for the left side.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
