WATER LEAKS INTO TRUNK FROM LICENSE PLATE POCKET (RESEAL)

SUBJECT: WATER RETENTION IN LICENSE PLATE POCKET (SEAL LICENSE PLATE POCKET AREA)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1992 CADILLAC ELDORADO

Some 1992 Eldorados may exhibit a condition where water is retained in the license plate pocket lower cover and drips into the rear compartment area when the deck lid is raised. To correct this condition the lower cover should be sealed to the deck lid so that any water retained will not drain when the deck lid is raised.

To repair this condition use the following procedure:

1. Remove the license plate pocket as described in Section 10-8 of the Service Information Manual.

2. Use a pumpable sealer that cures solid, and seal the areas indicated in Figure 1.

IMPORTANT: Apply only enough sealer to fill the gaps between the lower cover and deck lid metal. An excess of sealer may produce an interference condition when reinstalling the license plate pocket.

3. Allow the sealer to cure and reinstall the license plate pocket as described in Section 10-8 of the Service Information Manual.

4. Verify the correction by pouring water over the area where the license plate pocket is mounted and raising the deck lid.

If the area has been sealed properly only a few drops of water should fall into the trunk when the deck lid is raised. A steady stream of water indicates the area is not completely sealed and the above procedure should be repeated.

For vehicles repaired under warranty use: .5 hour.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
