INFO ON PARK LOCK CABLE (ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE)

SUBJECT: INFORMATION ON PARK LOCK CABLE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1992 CADILLAC ELDORADO AND SEVILLE

The following procedure describes the correct adjustment procedure for the park lock cable on 1992 Eldorados and Sevilles. This procedure was not included in the Preliminary Edition of the 1992 E/K Service Information Manual. It will be included in an upcoming revision.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The park lock cable links the console shifter and the steering column ignition switch. This linkage is necessary to prevent the shift lever from being moved out of "PARK" with the ignition switch in the "LOCK" position. The park lock cable linkage also prevents the ignition switch from being moved to the "LOCK" position with the shifter in a gear position other than "PARK".

The park lock cable is included only on cars equipped with a full console and console shifter. Vehicles with column shift (and the mini-console) include the park lock function within the steering column.

The park lock cable snaps into the steering column at one end and is mounted on the console shifter frame at the other end. The cable snaps into the park lock link on the shifter. The cable is adjustable at the shifter end.

PARK LOCK SYSTEM OPERATIONAL

Use the following procedure to verify correct park lock system operation:

Step 1:

With the console shift lever in "PARK" and the ignition switch in the "LOCK" position, pull up on the button on the shift lever and try to move the shift lever from the "PARK" position. The button should not move far enough to allow the shift lever to be moved from "PARK."

Step 2:

A. Turn the ignition switch to "RUN." It is not necessary to start the engine.

B. Depress the brake and move the shift lever to "REVERSE". Try to turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" position. The ignition switch should move to "OFF" but not to "LOCK".

C. Turn the ignition switch to "RUN" and move the shift lever to "NEUTRAL". Again try to turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" position. The ignition switch should move to "OFF" but not to "LOCK".

D. Turn the ignition switch to "RUN" and now move the shift lever to "OVERDRIVE" (D). Once more, try to turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" position. The ignition switch should move to "OFF" but not to "LOCK".

Step 3:

Return shift lever to "PARK" and turn ignition to the "LOCK" position. Try to remove the key. The key should be easily removable from the ignition switch.

If the vehicle's ignition and shift control systems do not operate as described in this operational check, adjust the park lock cable as described below.

PARK LOCK CABLE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE:

1. Remove radio trim plate.

2. Turn ignition to "OFF" position and move shift lever to "REVERSE". Remove console trim plate by disengaging five clips. Position trim plate out of the way to gain access to the forward end of the console shifter. It is not necessary to disconnect cigarette lighter wiring or to remove shift handle from shift lever. Refer to Figure 1.

3. Place shift lever in "PARK" and turn ignition switch to "LOCK".

4. Using a small, flat-bladed screw driver pull up on park lock cable locking tab until it is fully disengaged. Refer to Figure 2.

5. Grasp park lock cable housing forward of the shifter assembly and pull cable forward to remove all slack in adjuster. Refer to Figure 3.

6. While holding forward pressure on cable housing, push down cable locking tab until flush with cable fitting. Refer to Figure 3.

7. Check operation of park lock system as described in the PARK LOCK SYSTEM OPERATIONAL CHECK ABOVE. Re-adjust cable if necessary.

8. Install console trim plate and radio trim plate.

For vehicles repaired under warranty use: Labour Operation K5173 at .2 hour.

Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition.
