I/P CLUSTER DISPLAYS/FEATURES AND OPERATION INFORMATION

SUBJECT: 1992 ELDORADO/SEVILLE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DISPLAYS AND OPERATION INFORMATION

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1992 "E" AND "K" MODELS

This is to clarify operation of some 1992 Eldorado/Seville instrument panel cluster features. Please share this with sales and service advisors at your dealership. More information can be found in Service Information Manual Section 8C1, the Owner's Manual, and the 1992.

Average MPG Reset:

The Average MPG reading is computed as in 1991, but the reset feature was changed due to the reset button position on the cluster. On 1992 Eldorados and Sevilles it is necessary to press and hold reset for about four seconds to make the Average MPG reading reset. This is to avoid an unintended reset of fuel average mpg while reaching for the "information" or other cluster keys.

Range:

------- The range reading is computed as in 1991. The range computation uses fuel remaining in the tank and an average miles per gallon reading which is stored in the cluster memory.

o The displayed average litres per 100 kilometers (which is resettable by the customer) is not used in computing range. If a customer performs calculations using displayed average and fuel remaining on a digital cluster, the result may not match cluster displayed range (The fuel remaining on a digital cluster truncates to the nearest gallon.)

o New cars (less than 64 kilometers) or cars which have had a battery disconnect will display lower than expected range; the "average" in the cluster memory will be close to zero mpg until the car is driven and allowed to "learn" an average mpg. Therefore, range may begin at a "LO" indication or a very lo value, even with a full tank.

o Because the range calculation weighs the most recent driving experience (last 40 to 64 kilometers) more heavily, customers may notice range increasing on a transition from city to highway driving or decreasing on transitions from highway to city driving.

Fuel Gage

As in 1991, the digital cluster fuel gauge will display "F" with a full 18 gallon tank. "F" is displayed until the fuel level reaches 16.9 gallons. The gauge then drops from full to 16, then to 15 at 15.9 gallons, etc. The full to 16 transition is done to accommodate differing fuel fill levels which may result from varying fuel pump shutoff points, which could possibly result in a 17 gallon tank fill and complaints of "comes off full too soon".

The digital gauge displays "E" at 2.0 gallons and flashes "E" at 1.0 gallon. A 1.0 gallon fuel level will also cause a "FUEL LEVEL VERY LOW" message in the information centre on analog or digital cluster.

Oil Life Display/Reset: ----------------------- Oil life is computed and oil change notices are provided as in 1991. Due to vehicle shipping and idling/testing in vehicle assembly, it may be possible for a vehicle to display lower than expected oil life remaining (97% to 95%) with low odometer mileages (32 kilometers 32 or less kilometers). As in 1991, oil life is computed based on driving schedules and engine operating temperatures.

Oil life is displayed by repeatedly pressing the information key until "OIL LIFE INDEX" appears. Oil life can be reset after oil changes by displaying oil life index, then pressing the store/recall key for about five seconds until a value of 100 appears.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
