In late 1985 a change was made replacing the 'pre-formed' vinyl top available on the subject vehicle with a service replacement top of 'cut-and-sewn' construction. For identification purposes, the difference between the two tops is that the 'pre-formed' top had a foam pad integrally bonded to the vinyl cover, while with the 'cut-and-sewn' top, the foam pad is separate. In addition, the 'pre-formed' top was pre-cemented with Sta-Tac adhesive.
If a replacement top is installed, the black foam filler pads used under the 'pre-formed' top should be left in place when the original top is removed. If pads are damaged during removal and require replacement, they may be ordered under part numbers 20630724 and 20630725. The replacement procedures in the 1986 Shop Manual are applicable.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
