POWER DOOR LOCKS INOPERATIVE EXCESSIVE LOCK ROD LENGTH

SUBJECT: INCREASED LENGTH OF DOOR LOCK ROD

MODELS AFFECTED: 1991 BROUGHAMS

Some 1991 Broughams may experience a condition where the front door lock knobs extend above the door trim panels when the knobs are in the up, uniocked position. This can cause the lock rods to remain in the unlocked position when attempting to use the power locks to lock the doors. This condition may be due to the lock rods being 5 millimeters too long. To repair this condition the following service procedure can be used to reduce the length of the lock rods:

1. Lower the window.

2. Remove the door lock knob.

3. Taking care not to damage the door trim panel, thread a 5/16" die down the threads of the lock rod until at least 5mm (5/16") of the lock rod remains above the die.

4. Trim 5mm (3/16") off the top of the lock rod.

5. Thread the die up off the lock rod to remove any rough edges that resulted from the trimming process.

6. Reinstall the door lock knob.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
