General Guidelines - Overhaul or Replacement

Since the repair option released to dealers in September of 1985, there has been adequate opportunity for all dealers to complete the required training in the 3-day (17001.12) and one-day update (17001.16) courses for the 440-T4 transaxle. SRTA units should be utilized as the alternative to in-house overhaul for which the cost of repair would exceed the cost of a SRTA exchange.

The use of SRTA units for conditions involving shift pleasability and general performance is not usually required or practical. As additional information describing diagnosis, repair and update of these units is distributed over the next few months, the need for complete assembly replacement will be substantially reduced.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
