Removal Procedure

J 43828 Front Ball Joint Separater

The lower control arm ball joint is serviced only with the control arm and cannot be serviced separately.

To separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle, use the following procedure.


    Object Number: 402793  Size: SH
  1. Remove the tire and wheel.
  2. Remove the cotter pin from the ball joint stud.
  3. Remove the nut from the ball joint stud.

  4. Object Number: 491713  Size: SH
  5. Use J 43828 to separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 402793  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Attach the ball stud to the steering knuckle
  2. Install the nut to the ball stud.
  3. Tighten

        • Tighten the ball joint nut to 10 N·m (88 lb in).
        • Then tighten the nut two and a half flats to a minimum of 55 N·m (41 lb ft) to align for the cotter pin.
  4. Install the cotter pin (1).
  5. Install the tire and wheel.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten wheel nuts to 140 N·m (100 lb ft).
