The ball joints must be replaced if any looseness is detected
in the joint, or if the ball joint seal is cut.
- To inspect the ball joints, raise the front of the vehicle allowing
the suspension to hang free. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in
General Information.
- Grasp the tire at the top and bottom, and move the top of the
tire in an in-and-out motion.
- Check for any horizontal movement of the steering knuckle relative
to the control arm.
- If the ball stud is disconnected from the steering knuckle
and looseness can be detected, or if the ball stud can be twisted in the socket
using finger pressure, replace the ball joint.
- The ball stud tightness in the steering knuckle boss should also
be checked. this can be done by shaking the wheel and feeling for movement
of the stud end or nut at the steering knuckle boss. Worn or damaged ball
joints and knuckles must be replaced.
