The parking brake system is a mechanical system which operates on the rear disc brakes. The system is activated by depressing the parking brake pedal, which applies the rear brakes via cables. When the parking brake is set and the ignition switch is on, the BRAKE warning lamp on the I/P will be on. The parking brake is released electronically by shifting the transmission to the reverse (R) or drive (D) position. The pedal will return and the BRAKE lamp in the I/P will go out when the parking brake system is fully released.
