Problem

Action

Excessive internal pump or steering gear leakage.

Check for external leakage.

Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump Leaks .

The pump pressure is insufficient.

Check power steering pressure.

Refer to Power Steering System Test .

The joints from the column to the steering gear are loose or worn.

  1. Check for correct torque.
  2. Replace components as needed.

Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications in Steering Wheel and Column.

The steering gear valve is sticking.

  1. Flush the steering gear valve system.
  2. Bleed the steering gear valve system.
  3. Service partial steering gear if symptom persists.

Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .

The fluid is thick. In cold weather the fluid thickens and resists movement through the system.

  1. Drain and flush the system if ambient temperatures are -12°C (10°F) or lower.
  2. Refill with GM Low Temperature Climate Service Fluid or equivalent.

The plastic boot on the intermediate shaft is out of position.

  1. Inspect the plastic boot on the intermediate shaft.
  2. Replace if needed.
