Disassembly Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 23653-SIR Lock Plate Compressor
    • J 42137 Cam Orientation Plate Adapter
    • J 41688 Centering Sphere Installer Tool
  1. Remove the upper and lower shroud. Refer to Trim Covers, Shift Lever Seal Replacement - Off Vehicle
  2. Remove the SIR coil assembly. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement - Off Vehicle .
  3. Remove the tilt spring. Refer to Tilt Spring - Off Vehicle .

  5. Remove the bearing retainer (1) using J 23653-SIR and J 42137.
  6. Remove the cam orientation plate (2).

  7. Object Number: 295931  Size: SH
  8. Remove the turn signal cancel cam assembly (2).
  9. Remove the upper bearing spring (1).
  10. Remove the upper bearing inner race seat (4).
  11. Remove the inner race (3).

  13. Remove the two wire harness straps (2). Remove one wire harness strap (2) from the steering column tilt head assembly (1).

  15. Pop the wire harness assembly (1) from the wire harness strap (2).

  17. Remove the blue (1), and gray (2) connectors of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly.

  19. Remove two tapping screws (1).

  23. Remove two pan head tapping screws (2).
  24. Remove the switch mounting bracket (1).

  27. Remove the sensor retainer (3).
  28. Remove the hi res steering wheel position sensor assembly (1).

  30. Remove the lower spring retainer (2).
  31. Remove the lower bearing spring (3).
  32. Remove the lower bearing seat (4).
  33. Remove the adapter and bearing assembly (1).

  35. Remove two pivot pins (1) using J 21854-1.

  37. When working on the power tilt and telescope column remove the ball stud (2) from the steering column tilt head assembly (1).

  39. Remove the steering column tilt head assembly (1) with the steering shaft assembly. Install the tilt arm and pull to disengage the steering column tilt head assembly (1).

  41. Remove the steering shaft assembly (1).

    Important: Mark the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower steering shaft assembly to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.

  43. Tilt the race and upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the lower steering shaft assembly and disengage. If necessary, remove and discard the old centering sphere and spring.

  45. When working on the power tilt and telescope column remove four torx head screws (3) from the tilt actuator assembly (2) that is mounted on the steering column housing support assembly (1).

  47. When working on the power tilt and telescope column remove the retaining ring (5), compression spring (4), shoulder bolt, (3) and the anti rotation ball (1) from the steering column housing support assembly (2).

  49. When working on the power tilt and telescope column remove four torx head screws (2) from the telescope actuator assembly (3) that is mounted on the telebearing and jacket assembly (1).

  52. Remove the steering column housing support assembly (3) from the telebearing and jacket assembly (2).

  55. Remove the steering column support assembly (1).

Assembly Procedure

    • J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover
    • J 23653-SIR Lock Plate Compressor
    • J 42137 Cam Orientation Plate Adapter
    • J 41688 Centering Sphere Installer Tool

  1. Install the steering column support assembly (1) to the steering column jacket assembly (3).
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install four torx screws (2).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  5. When working on the power tilt and telescope column install the steering column housing support assembly (3) to the telebearing and jacket asm (2) by using four torx head screws (1).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  7. When working on the power tilt and telescope column install the tilt actuator asm (2) to the steering column housing support assembly (1) and secure by using four torx head screws (3).
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  9. When working on the power tilt and telescope column install the anti rotation ball (1), shoulder bolt (3), compression spring (4) and the retaining ring (5) to the steering column housing support assembly (2).

  10. Object Number: 302404  Size: SH
  11. When working on the power tilt and telescope column install the telescope actuator assembly (3) to the telebearing and jacket assembly (1) by using four torx head screws (2).
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  13. Install the centering sphere (1) and the joint preload spring (2) using J 41688. Lubricate the centering sphere (1) with lithium grease.

  15. Compress the centering sphere and joint preload spring. Rotate the driver 90 degrees in the clockwise direction until the arms lock in place.

  17. Install the race and upper shaft assembly (1). Rotate the race and upper shaft assembly 90 degrees.

  19. Remove the race and upper shaft assembly with the J 41688 then remove the race and upper shaft assembly with the centering sphere.

  21. Apply lithium grease to the exposed shaft engagement areas (1) and then install the lower steering shaft assembly (2).

  23. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the steering column tilt head assembly (1).

  25. Install the steering column tilt head assembly (1).
  26. Install two pivot pins (2) using J 21854-1.

  28. Stake the pivot pin locations (1).

  30. When working on the power tilt and telescope column lubricate the ball stud (2) with grease #774 VLF.
  31. Install the ball stud (2) through the opening at the end of the tilt actuator assembly (1) located on the steering column tilt head assembly (3).

  33. Install the switch mounting bracket (1).
  34. Install two pan head tapping screws (2).
  35. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 7 N·m (62 lb in).

  36. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (1).

  38. Install the two pan head tapping screws (1)
  39. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 7 N·m (62 lb in).

  40. Install the inner race (2).
  41. Install the upper bearing inner race seat (3).
  42. Install the upper bearing spring (1).

  44. Install the turn signal cancel cam assembly (3). Lubricate with lithium grease.
  45. Install the cam orientation plate (1).
  46. Install the bearing retainer (2) using J 23653-SIR and J 42137. The bearing retainer must seat in the groove on the race and upper shaft assembly.

  48. Install the wave washer (1) onto the race and upper shaft assembly (2).

  50. To install the SIR coil assembly:
  51. • Make sure the wheels are straight ahead.
    • Align the block tooth and the centering mark on the race and upper shaft assembly (1) in the 12 o'clock position.

  52. Ensure the SIR coil assembly is centered. If replacing the SIR coil assembly refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement - Off Vehicle .
  53. 30.1. Depress the tab (1) on the back of the SIR coil assembly and rotate the center of the SIR coil assembly 6 revolutions. Follow the direction of the black arrow.
    30.2. Turn the SIR coil assembly 2.5 revolutions the opposite direction from the step listed above.

  54. Install the retaining ring (1). The retaining ring must seat securely onto the race and upper shaft assembly (2).

  56. Install and align the adapter and bearing assembly (1).
  57. Install the lower bearing seat (3). The lower bearing seat must be in contact with the adapter and bearing assembly.
  58. Install the lower bearing spring (2).

  60. Install the lower spring retainer (1). Press the spring retainer onto the steering shaft assembly to 36 MM from the end of the adapter and bearing assembly.

    Important: The steering shaft assembly must be rotated to the center position or 12 o'clock position.

  62. Install the hi res steering wheel position sensor assembly (1).
  63. 36.1. Rotate the center of the sensor until the pin slides into the locating hole. It may take up to five revolutions.
    36.2. Push the sensor onto the steering shaft assembly until the sensor locating finger falls into the slot on the steering shaft assembly.

  64. Install the sensor retainer (1). Align the slots of the sensor retainer to the ribs of the adapter and bearing assembly. Push the sensor retainer (1) until it contacts the hi res steering wheel position sensor assembly.
  65. Install the steering shaft seal (2).

  67. Route the wire harness assembly along the steering column jacket assembly.

  69. Install the blue (1), black (2), and gray (3) connectors.

  71. Pop the wire harness assembly (1) into the wire harness strap (2).

  73. Install the two wire harness straps (2). Install one wire harness strap (2) to the steering column tilt head assembly (1).
  74. Install the tilt spring. Refer to Tilt Spring - Off Vehicle .

  76. Confirm the column is in the fully extended position before installing wire harness.
  77. When working on the power tilt and telescope column install the wire harness assembly (2) into the lower wire shield (1).

    In the lower wire shield (1) place the wires in the direction (3) shown.

  78. When working on the power tilt and telescope column slide the Steering Column interface module assembly (2) into the lower wire shield (1).

  80. When working on the power tilt and telescope column install the green (5), brown (4), natural (3) and the black (2) connectors into the Steering Column interface module assembly (1).

  82. When working on the power tilt and telescope column install the three wire harness straps (2) onto the wire harness assembly.
  83. Install the wire harness strap (1) into the steering column tilt head assembly.
  84. Install the tilt spring. Refer to Tilt Spring - Off Vehicle .
  85. Install the SIR coil assembly. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement - Off Vehicle
  86. Install the upper and lower shrouds. Refer to Trim Covers, Shift Lever Seal Replacement - Off Vehicle
