1. Remove the upper and lower shroud. Refer to Trim Covers, Shift Lever Seal Replacement - Off Vehicle .



2. Use the tilt lever to tilt the column in the "UP" position.




Caution
The tilt spring and the spring guide are under pressure and could become a projectile. During the disassembly and assembly procedures, secure the tilt spring with locking pliers. Exercise caution when removing or installing the tilt spring and the spring guide, as bodily injury may result.

Remove the tilt spring (1).

3.1.	Pry the tilt spring up until a bulge occurs and most of the tilt spring tension is removed.

3.2.	Secure the tilt spring and continue prying until the tilt spring disengages from the post on the steering column support assembly (2) and the steering column tilt head assembly (3).




3. Remove the spring guide (1) from the tilt spring (2).

Tools Required

1. Install the inner race (3).
2. Install the upper bearing inner race seat (4).
3. Install the upper bearing spring (1).
4. Install the turn signal cancel cam assembly (2).



5. Install the cam orientation plate (2). Lubricate with synthetic grease (service kit).
6. Install the bearing retainer (3) using tools J 23653-SIR and J 242137. Bearing retainer must be firmly seated in the groove on the race & upper shaft assembly.
7. Install the wave washer (1).



8. To install the SIR coil assembly:

•	Make sure the wheels are straight ahead.

•	Align the block tooth and the centering mark on the race & upper shaft assembly (1) at the 12 o'clock position.




9. Ensure the SIR coil assembly is centered if its not being replaced. A new SIR coil assembly will come precentered. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement - Off Vehicle .

9.1.	Depress the tab (1) on the back of the SIR coil assembly and rotate the center of the SIR coil assembly 6 revolutions. Follow the direction of the black arrow.

9.2.	Turn 2.5 revolutions the opposite direction from the step listed above.




10. Align the SIR coil assembly (1) with the horn tower on the turn signal cancel cam assembly (2) and install.



11. Install the retaining ring (1) onto the race & upper shaft assembly (2).
12. Install the upper and lower shroud. Refer to Trim Covers, Shift Lever Seal Replacement - Off Vehicle .
