Tilt/Telescoping Operation

The tilt/telescoping steering column has a four-position switch which may be used to adjust the position of the steering wheel in or out (telescope) and up or down (tilt). Change the position of the column as follows:

    • Press the switch up to tilt the column up.
    • Press the switch down to tilt the column down.
    • Press the switch forward and the column moves toward the front of the vehicle.
    • Press the switch rearward and the column moves toward the rear of the vehicle.

Pressing the switch in any direction momentarily (releasing it within 0.5 seconds) causes the column to "inch" in the corresponding direction a slight distance, then stop. This feature allows fine control of the steering column position in each direction. If the switch is pressed and held (for longer than 0.5 seconds), the column "inches" a slight amount in that direction, pauses, then resumes continuous movement as long as the switch is held.

Tilt/Telescoping Memory/Personalization

Memory settings and personalization of the steering wheel positions are available with the tilt/telescoping steering column. The settings available depend on whether or not the vehicle is equipped with memory switches. (Vehicles equipped with memory have a set of four switches, MEMORY SET, EXIT, 1 and 2, located on the driver's door panel.) The data stored consists of entry positions and exit positions. The entry position is the position the steering column moves to when the ignition is turned ON. The exit position is the position the steering column moves to when the ignition is turned OFF and the driver's door is opened.

Tilt/Telescoping Column Positions -- Without Memory

On vehicles without memory, the tilt/telescoping steering column can be set to store two positions: an exit position and an entry position. The exit position in this case defaults to the position with the column all the way forward and all the way up. The entry position is the last known location of the column when the ignition was previously turned OFF. These two settings may be enabled or disabled by using personalization setup procedures with the driver information center (DIC). These settings are either both on or both off.

Tilt/Telescoping Column Positions -- With Memory

On vehicles with memory, the tilt/telescoping steering column can be set to store six possible positions: three possible entry positions and three possible exit positions. These settings may be enabled or disabled by using personalization setup procedures with the driver information center (DIC). Using the DIC, it is possible to enable all three entry positions or disable them all. Similarly, the exit positions may be all enabled or all disabled. The positions of the tilt/telescoping steering column that may be store are as follows:

    • Default exit position (all forward, all up).
    • Driver 1 exit position, set using the memory switches.
    • Driver 2 exit position, set using the memory switches.
    • Last known driver exit position (when ignition was previously turned OFF).
    • Driver 1 entry position, set using the memory switches.
    • Driver 2 entry position, set using the memory switches.
